You cannot pray for faith. Faith is produced and grows from hearing the Word of God.

agree w/Tom & Aaron...if the disciples can ask God firsthand for it, why can't I?

I believe that the act of prayer in itself requires a certain degree of faith in itself.

It's a catch-22. It takes faith to pray for faith, therefore you cannot pray for faith if you have none.

That is not what the title says, it says you can't pray for faith. BUt you can.

Not that that anyone seeks true faith without God's gift of faith.

By contrast, we are commanded to:

James 1:5 (Geneva Bible, 1599 Edition):
If any of you lacke wisedome, let him aske of God,
which giueth to all men liberally,
and reprocheth no man, and it shalbe giuen him.

Of course we can pray for faith... We can pray for anything... whether we get it is another answer...

His word is A WAY that God increases our faith...
Trials and tribulations increase our faith also...

Just like patience... when you pray for it, expect God to give you circumstances in which you can use it...
    Practice makes perfect...

If you want to perfect your faith.. pray for tribulations....

All the verses mentioned here say one thing: the one doing the praying already has some faith in God. They are praying for an INCREASE in faith. If they had no faith at all, then they wouldn't be praying.

Like it takes patience to pray for patience?

Certainly we can pray for faith. I've done it many times and been rewarded for it.

It's like you want to believe something, but you don't and you ask for the faith to believe it.

How many of us are surprised when our prayers are answered?

But in this case, you already have some faith to believe someone is listening to your prayers. You are praying that your faith will be increased. If you have no faith, there is no one to pray to. For me, this would be a tragic situation to be in.

Your title should have been you can't pray for faith if you have none.

That wouldn't always hold true either though.

How many people do you know who are not sure if there is a God and they will say, "God if you're real......" They are praying for the faith to believe when they have none.

Sorry, but that title was too long.

But is doubt about the existence of God a true indication of the beginnings of faith? Isn't the person who says a prayer like this asking for proof first, before he believes?

    love,

    Sopranette
