    I have Sword Searcher for my computer, a PC Bible prgram for my ancient computer, and my Scofeild study Bible that has notes, and a commentarty in the back.
    Commentaries are just wondeful! I can find verses so quickly, were as without one, I'd be looking for one thing all day! Took me forever to figure out how to use it though! When I learned I was like "Duh, Abby, why not look up a word or phrase? You might just find it! [​IMG]

    Jim, I have also found that when I don't know what a verse means and look it up in a commentary, they very often do not comment on that verse! :rolleyes:

    BTW, a plug for the Baptists - unless it has changed in the last few years, English Baptist pastor John Gill is the only person to comment on every verse of scripture in the Bible.

    Just in case some be interested I might mention that a free downloadable Bible study program named e-Sword has the entire Gill commentary on it. Other relatively profitable commentaries on it are Robertson's Word Pictures of the NT, Vincent's Word Studies of the NT, Jamieson-Fausset-Brown commentary on the whole Bible, Keil&Delitzsch commentary on the OT. It also has the Geneva Bible, it is the first time I have seen this version online for free download. It also has the TR of Scrivener with Strong's numbers, as well as some other profitable texts. I have found the e-Sword pleasant to use and easy on the eyes.

    Amen to that, Dan. I don't have them all (and probably will get them only as needed) but they are about the best expository commentaries to assist preaching.

    Lenski (a good Lutheran) has some of the best Greek NT commentaries.

    My favorite commentaries are the Thru The Bible Series with J. Vernon McGee. They are wonderful.

    Gee, doesn't anybody read Wesley's explanatory notes? ......... OK, their not my favorite either. I use several including MH, JFB, Halley, and others; but I can't claim one of those as a favorite.

    One of my seminary professors once told us to never use a commentary until the very last, because when you read in prayer - when you're guided by the Holy Spirit - you are the best commentator going. So with that in mind, I am my favorite commentator. :D

    Amen! to the New Bible Dictionary, also-
    Ancient Christian Commentar(ies)IVP, Jerome Bible Commentary (RC), Tyndale commentaries, and most-especially, the "Bible Speaks Today" series (IVP)edited by John Stott.

    Tough question.
    I only buy individual volumes not a series
    although I have a lot of Tyndale OT and NT.

    I like the one volume commmentaries
    listed by Jude.

    I also like NICOT and NT commentaries.
    I use these volumes a lot.

    The NIVAC is good too.

    I didn't see any mention him but John Phillips has some great commentaries. I am trying to build up my collection now.

    Weirsbe (sp) has some really good ones as well.
