What are your favorite hymns, say at least around 40 years old? I started to ask what is your favorite hymn, then I realized it is too difficult to choose just one. Therefore, you can list anywhere between one and ten of your favorite hymns. I'm sure many of us have the same ones.

I have a lot of favorites, but to sing? Well, I think " The Old rugged Cross". I start out slow and low, then, burst into "for a world of lost SINNERS WAS SAVED!" I've always loved Christmas hymns, too.

This may sound silly, but it's gotten to where if I hear a hymn sung at all, that's my favorite.

    Blessed Assurance
It is Well with my Soul
    The Old Rugged Cross
    How Great Thou Art
    Victory in Jesus

    Just to name a few . . .

Aren't there though! I kindof wanted to say everyone in the hymnal -- because at some time or another, every one I've ever sung or heard has touched my heart in someway.

You're so right! Sometimes I zero in on the words and find them ministering to me. At times I was so impacted by a particular song, I wanted to replace Victory in Jesus with that impactful song.

I've looked at the lists that others have posted, and I have not seen some of my favorites yet.

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing
    On Jordan's Banks I Stand
    What Wondrous Love Is This
    O, Sacred Head Now Wounded
God of Grace and God of Glory
God Moves In A Mysterious Way
If You Will Only Let God Guide You
Share His Love (my father wrote words and music)
Jesus, Thy Boundless Love To Me
Jesus, The Very Thought of Thee

I also sing shape-note music from several tunebooks including The Sacred Harp. There are many good hymns in those books that you may never hear anywhere else.

One congregational song I haven't heard in a long time is "We Gather Together". It's a lovely song, easy to sing, and reminds me of my childhood church, where we sang it quite often. "Faith Of Our Fathers" takes a lot of breath control, but has a strong message in it. I sang it for this little church. The Pastor there was amazed someone actually knew the song at all, even though it was right there in the hymnal! The organist wanted to repeat the last line in a soft voice, but I sang it stronger than ever...after all, why sing "we will be true, to thee, till death" softly, when it's such a powerful promise ?

    love,

My two favorites are "There Is A Fountain Filled With Blood," and "Victory In Jesus"

When I sing Victory in Jesus, I change the lyrics to the chorus just slightly to make it more personal...

    Oh Victory In Jesus
    My Savior forever
You sought me and You bought me
    With Your redeeming blood
You loved me e'er I knew You
And all my love is due You
    You plunged me
    To victory
    Beneath that cleansing flood.
