Mormonism: your best argument(s)

    I was wondering what is the best argument(s) you people use when a Mormon begins to discuss their theology with you. What is their response to it and how would you counter?

    I had a Mormon tell me that the following quote by McConkie was "official Mormon doctrine".

    We worship the Father and him only and no one else. We do not worship the Son and we do not worship the Holy Ghost. I know perfectly well what the Scriptures say about worshiping Christ and Jehovah, but they are speaking in an entirely different sense - the sense of standing in awe and being reverentially grateful to him who has redeemed us. Worship in the true and saving sense is reserved for God first, the Creator (Bruce McConkie, speech at BYU, March 2, 1982).


    He was entirely unable to respond when I read him the following:
    1. And now behold, I say unto you that the right way is to believe in Christ, and deny him not; and Christ is the Holy One of Israel; wherefore ye must bow down before him, and worship him with all your might, mind, and strength, and your whole soul; and if ye do this ye shall in no wise be cast out (2 Nephi 25:29).
    2. "The Father and the Son are the objects of all true worship." Later McConkie writes, "It is proper to worship the Father, in the name of the Son, and also to worship the Son" (Mormon Doctrine, Bruce McConkie, Second Edition, page 848).

    I didn't probe him with these:

    1. Adam was made from the dust of an earth, but not from the dust of this earth (Brigham Young, Second Mormon President, Journal of Discourses 3:319).
    2. The Book of Mormon, the Bible, Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price all declare that Adam's body was created from the dust of the ground, that is, from the dust of this ground, this earth (Joseph Fielding Smith, Tenth Mormon President, Doctrines of Salvation 1:90).

    It has lots of info on Mormons and what to say. It's a ministry run by a friend of mine, Bill McKeever, who has been doing this for something like 30 yrs. He lives in Utah.

    I think you did a good job! :thumbsup:

    Where I used to live, Mormons would come all the time (it was an apartment complex with a lot of foreigners, which they like, as do the JWs). I would usually wait and see what they would ask and then respond to that.

    I found that they often referred to James and to that verse about being justified by works. Then I would explain that justification does not always mean salvation (in the case of that verse, it means that your faith is justified before men through your works). James and other books have the verse that Abraham was justified by faith. I would point that out and say that since the Bible does not contradict itself on that, we have to look at the context.

    Of course, they are taught that the Bible is correct "insofar as it is correctly translated."

    I normally tell them that I used to see commercials that said the book of mormon was another gospel of Jesus Christ and ask them if that is true. They have always responded with an enthusistic "yes".

    I then take them to Gal. 1:6+ especially v. 8-9 "But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed. (9) As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you recieved, let him be accursed."

    Mormons say that The Book of Mormon is another gospel of Jesus Christ. This is just as true as The Book of Mormon is a gospel of another Jesus Christ (see 2 Corinthians 11:4).

    I like to tell them Matthew 24 when Jesus said" 24:26 If therefore they tell you, 'Behold, he is in the wilderness,' don't go out; 'Behold, he is in the inner chambers,' don't believe it.
    24:27 For as the lightning comes forth from the east, and is seen even to the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Mormons believe the"Mormon Jesus" appeared to Joseph Smith. I also use where Jesus said to the Scribes"you do err not knowing the scripture" "For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven." Mormons believe in marriage and having babies ect on there own planets.
