My church for many years has produced and presented an annual Christmas Program which consisted mostly of traditional Christmas Music. This gave way to a drama presentation with music accompaniment.
This year we are presenting our program in the local civic center "in order to reach more people"and charging an admission fee of five dollars ($5) to help control the crowd by insuring that those having tickets will attend. The entire fee will be donated to a worldwide Christian Charity. I see nothing wrong with this I was wondering if any other church has a like situation or experience. Note; anyone objecting to the fee will be given free tickets with a promise of attending. I'm usually one to object to changing tradition but not in tis case.

For a concert, there's nothing wrong with it at all.

That depends on whether or not your church is paying the preformers, or the preformers are church members, or paying for the civic center it's being held at. if the church isn't paying for either, I can't see it's right to charge people to come listen to whats cost the church nothing extra.

I see nothing wrong with charging.

Whenever we do anything like that we always tell people that we don't see tickets, we "trade them for money"

Our church has had Greater Vision perform in our church every spring for the last six/seven years. We have sold tickets to cover the cost of the group and a small amount for local advertising. The church makes no money off the event, and without tickets we would have no way to ensure that lots of people would not have to be turned away at the door for lack of space. I would not want to see 1200 people turn up for a 400 seat event.

Now there can be significant costs, even if the venue is "free" and the performers are unpaid.

Depending on the set, and props, and sound/lights...the cost could be significant.

Just a clarifying issue...I don't know if there is extra costs or not...

I don't see a problem with charging a small fee... unless it keeps someone from hearing the message. That of course is the biggest problem with charging.

I guess it just depends on who your intended audience is, after all poor people already think church is only for the rich and don't want to come because of it, this would only help to further that in their mind.

I don't see a problem with selling tickets. Now if tickets were required to attend normal worship services that would be different, but for a special event like this I believe it would be alright.
