Fair enough. Just like the killing of Bin Laden this was a bi-partisan win.
I didn't realise though that President Bush negotiated a withdrawal for Dec 2012. Do you gave a source handy? Not doubting, just not at a computer.

Found it. Now I am even more impressed by President Obama in this situation.
Roger - I urge you to go back and do your research. Yes, I'm happy that we're bringing the troops home; but this wasn't because it was planned. It was because there was a break-down in negotiations about applying Iraq law to American soldiers. The decision came down to: keep the troops in Iraq and allow them to be tried in Iraqi courts and subject to Iraqi law/punishments; or leave Iraq.
No matter how it's spun, the only reason this campaign promise is finally being fulfilled is because the administration knew how much of a negative impact this would have on Obama if he had decided to keep the troops in place and allow them to be tried in islamic courts. It wasn't because he wanted to bring them home; if the negotiations had been favorable, we would not be leaving Iraq.
So yes, thanks for making the decision to bring them home. But let's make sure we understand why the decision was made.

First - they all have not come home - many simple crossed the border into Kuwait.
Second - Obama promised during his campaign in 08, that he would start bringing troops home by Mar of 09
Third - Obama said the Iraq war is over. That is incorrect.
The American involvement in Iraq is over
Fourth - In eleven months Obama will be facing the voters for re-election - must simply be a coincidence

I guess you missed the words 'in this situation?' I think the man should be impeached, but in this situation he has done the right thing and followed through on commitments made by President Bush.

All politician's decisions are politically motivated.
The important thing is that he followed through on a plan to bring the heroes home from a place they never should have been. The tragedy is that so many were killed or maimed under two presidents before it finally happened.
They are out. And that is a good thing.
To "follow through" on a plan, one must intend to fulfill that plan. There was no intention to fulfill that plan until it became clear that if he remained the course--which was the intention--there would be greater repercussions. "Fulfilling" the campaign promise was a secondary result.
So I thank him for making the correct decision and not subjecting our troops to islamic law, not for "fulfilling" a campaign promise that he didn't actually intend to keep.
Yes, they are out, and that's a good thing.

In 2 years, if Iran has not attacked Iraq, and if Iraq does not plunge into civil war, either of which will negate any success we had in Iraq, forcing us to return to Iraq in a much worse situation than we encountered the first time.....then I will applaud this decision to pull out.
And, the current newly "elected" dictator of Iraq looks to be as bad as Saddam himself. We should have taken steps to remove him instead of giving in to his refusal to grant Americans immunity from Iraqi law.
No, my friends, I fear that the problems in Iraq and our involvement are destined to get worse. We will have to go back, and probably, because of this ill advised withdrawl, lose even more American lives than we did the first time.
War is hell, but sometimes it saves more lives than it costs.
