The question I have for the BB concerns the principle of disavowing what God has done.

For instance, we would probably all agree that God has made certain divisions: man/woman, species of birds and fish, light and dark, ...

It is also true that God uses the aspects of separation to distinguishing purposes: separating the spotted/unspotted, Jews/gentiles, ...

In both the examples above it is self evident that God considers removal of the separations problematic. Example: blending an eagle with a humming bird, or shark with a goldfish...

It is also noted that the Scriptures place certain restrictions as to health, dietary, social, worship, ... that marked out His people as different and unique.

Having established that God divides and humankind is regarded as going against God's way by disavowing and making changes to that established way, I thought the BB might consider the following:

God looked down and saw the folks construction work and knowing that it was dangerous, separated the folks by placing certain language barriers to prevent cooperation.

Does then humankind actually work in some manner against the way of God by tearing down the barrier and acquiring a non-native language?

Is it actually wrong to learn another language?

Perhaps some may consider such a notion as absurd, but I remind the folks that it was God who divided the humankind by languages, as he divided many other items of nature.

Also, humankind blends species to "strengthen the breed" or genetically engineer to ward off disease.

Is this actually a work against the desire of God?

I would like to keep the thread limited to languages, but frankly the principle would apply to a vast number of areas the BB folks may want to trek.

I think your understanding of these issues and divisions is different than the purposes of God.

This is the begging the question fallacy, you haven't established that "God divides" line of thought. I challenge this interpretation of these events.

This interpretation of the Tower of Babel scene is erroneous and pushes a point too far. It isn't that mankind has had languages imposed upon it that are unable to be overcome. The Babel scene has a different point, that as a result of their rebellion, God judged mankind by confusing their languages and scattering them across the world.

No. I am fluent in three foreign languages and have reading knowledge of another two. Using this kind of line of thought would discourage anyone from producing Bible translations from the original texts. Since the OT and NT are in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek we would be sinning to have English (or any other language) translations and not have access to God's inscripturated words.

Think about that, we would have zero access to the Scriptures. Would God desire that?

    I don't think so.

I would imagine that such people on BB as John of Japan probably had to learn a different language in order to minister to the folks where God has called him.

So when a Pastor/missionary/teacher actually learned say hebrew/Greek of the Bible, would that be sinful?

    Op clarification

I realize this seems like a bit of a "silly" thread.

Perhaps the OP wasn't as specific as some threads.

However, it was hoped that a discovery of the process(es) the BB folks go through when approaching a decision concerning an item, such as divisions established by God (make your own choice) could be discerned. What Scripture principles should be used as a guide; what distinctions perhaps ought to be considered in making of a preference and which should be held as more considerately in unchangeable "laws" of God.

(The following "for instance" is used purely as an example held in the past that we old generation established as needing significant change.)

    For instance:
Back in the day, segregation came to the front burner and brought to the door of the church as no longer to be tolerated.

In seeking to counter the drive to tear down (at least in part) the racial divides, all manner of "Scripture reasons" were offered.

In looking back, much of the problem rested in fear of releasing the "comfort zone" of tradition that should never have had a foothold. Much ado was made by opponents to inclusion and some lasting scares were the result of bitter fights and battles that spun out of control.

So, by picking a relatively benign topic (languages), in which God did use to separate and which humankind have continually worked to negate, was chosen in the OP so the thread wouldn't run amok discussing a more hurtful topic.

Then, when a series of guides were somewhat established, more serious investigations would have a framework that perhaps could gather a form of unity and agreement focus upon the Scriptures.

The thread may be a non-starter, but one of the discoveries in dealing with issues in the day was no actual consistency. This thread hoped to at least set forth some guidelines.
