Bulletproof glass protecting city store clerks may have to come down — over ‘indignity’ to customers

bill headed through Philadelphia City Hall would force businesses to remove bulletproof glass protecting employees inside stores.

What’s the reasoning here?

• Councilwoman Cindy Bass — a Democrat who offered the bill — told WTXF-TV she’s concerned about shoppers’ feelings.
• “We want to make sure that there isn’t this sort of indignity, in my opinion, to serving food through a plexiglass only in certain neighborhoods,” Bass told the station.

Do you mean because those stores are in dangerous areas? I do agree that those stores are scary. I stopped in one in the daytime that I thought was in a good area but when I saw the bulletproof glass I decided not to stop there anymore.

I would say that I have found bulletproof glass in filling stations and convenience stores in all parts of Indianapolis, although not in the suburbs. Indianapolis has a murder rate as high as Chicago in terms of the percentage per capita. Philadelphia has to be a terrible place. I feel sorry for people trapped in those bad neighborhoods.

Why should you be trusted? They do not know you? If you walk into my store and I do not know you I do not trust you either. Why is that a problem?

I maintain my situational awareness at all times. Every person I encounter I think of as a threat to myself and my loved ones, and examine every situation for best tactical advantage in the event that person attempts to harm me or my loved ones.

Carrying a firearm is different than bullet proof glass. You will see these stores will begin to lose business now that the situation has come to light. Stores lose money, they change. I am all for clerks being armed.

None at all. The arms are only used when criminal behavior is observed. The glass is used on everyone.

Oh well that is a new standard you have presented. Before it was just that they acted like they didn't trust you. Same could be said of store clerks who carry guns, use security or cameras.
