Louisiana College Covers Tuition for MKs

    "at Louisiana College, trustees voted unanimously in their Oct. 30 meeting to offer free tuition to dependents of missionaries serving with the Southern Baptist Convention's International Mission Board."

    "IMB President David Platt voiced thanks to the college....Platt said just one week earlier IMB staff had prayed 'specifically for the college-age TCKs who will spend the upcoming holidays away from their families and their adopted homes overseas. Needless to say, then, I was thrilled when I heard that Louisiana College made this decision to help provide for the higher education needs of Southern Baptist missionary families.'"

    This is a very welcome development. MKs coming back to the homeland for college (or anything else) have a very difficult row to hoe. (We were just talking with our son yesterday about this.) They face a culture they don't understand; a generation of young people steeped in entertainment that the MK doesn't understand or maybe even know about; a Christianity that may seem anemic and self-centered. These young people deserve all the help they can get.

    And I'm assuming qualifying for in-state tuition rates at public schools is a common hassle?

    Certainly, as are many other areas of education, Christian or secular, for an MK.

    We talked with missionary friends recently whose son duly got his degree and then went to teach in a Christian deaf school. He was rebuked by the admin for allowing dirty words (which he did not know) to be used by the students--words the deaf did not use in the country he grew up in. He was then crossed up by the principal for giving demerits when the parents objected. The principal came with the parents to the classroom, took away the demerits in front of the students.

    Our friends' son is now a security guard rather than teaching for the Lord because of this nonsense.
