Our SS class does verse by verse teaching, so it's necessary for each one of us to have our own Bibles because we take turns reading.

I like to make sure the Pastor is teaching correctly also.

I hope he doesn't read the BB posts. :tongue3:

While I believe there will be catholics in Heaven, I can't see how a believer that is "terrifically faithful" to the catholic faith can have a vibrant faith in Christ. That's on oxymoron, IMO.

Joe , your pew Bibles are KJV 1611 ? Have they been modernized at all with improved typeface , current lettering , etc. ?

    Taking Bible to Church

I for one can not imagine NOT taking my Bible to church! Does your pastor preach from the Bible? If not you need to look for a new place if so how can you follow along with his points without your bible at hand? Don't you take notes underline important points that you had not thought about? Unless you have 100% total recall and your life never changes then I guess you could with only reading the Bible once. Each time you read don't you read things that seem more important to you then the last time? The same gos for at church - When the pastor is giving his sermon don't you think that he just might point something out in his biblical references that you did not notice before?

Not a flame but I agree with webdog has said.

Also, Catholics who make it to glory will do so not because of their church's teaching but rather in-spite of it.

The hard cold fact of the matter is that the RCC teaches a salvation by works, not by grace thru faith.

I have one that i have been usually using for devotional reading and personal study time, but i don't always bring it to church on Sunday since i don't usually preach out of it.
I have a couple of different translations that i keep in my office that i tend to preach out of (ESV, HCSB, NASB or NKJV) depending on my mood more than anything.

I encourage everyone to turn to the passage i'm preaching from when i get to the pulpit, and i also announce the page number of the passage for the pew Bibles too.

Now to weigh in on the OP, I always take my Bible to church. To me it is part of the going to church process.

    Rippon,
I think so, but I don't have an old one to compare it with. Our Pastor believes the 1611 is best but I am not convinced since reading some in the bible translation forum.

This is such an interesting discussion! :wavey: I always take my Bible with me to church. I am one of those note-taking, writing in the margins, highlighting text kind of people. I have about ten different Bibles, I think, and I always make sure I have one even though the pastor usually puts the verses he is preaching on the overhead screen and the Sunday school verses are in the books we use. I like to be able to look the verses up in my own translation. I know a lot of people who don't carry Bibles to church, though...I've never thought to ask them why they don't.

I just think it is a good idea because then you can make notations in your bible, be it KJV or NIV, and then when you read it yourself, you can see the notes.

My mom just gave me a new Bible cover for my "car Bible". It looks like a football with NFL described as "new found life" complete with the laces going down the binder.

    I do

I take mine to church with me! The pastor likes us to- we follow along as he reads from it. I take my bible just about everywhere I go-I'll leave it in the van if we go in somewhere!:jesus:

In our church you kind of have to follow along either with a pew Bible or your own. Our Pastor is not a great reader--he sometimes skips words or interjects his own words without realizing it and sometimes changes the meaning of what's being written completely so that if you're just trying to listen you'll end up understanding a passage completely wrong.

That is a pretty serious accusation.

I don't see it as an accusation at all. The key is, he does it "without realizing it". I believe it's completely accidental. Maybe he needs reading glasses...?

When I was in school and I had an English class I took my English book.

If I had a Math class I would do the same. Just another comparison to ponder.
