Jesus of Nazareth was active in politics. He consistently rebuked the powerful and wealthy for their mistreatment of the poor, sick, hungry and oppressed

    Gospel Politics

Did he rebuke - yes, of course -
but that does not make him political

Considering politics and religion were completely entangled at that time He definitely was.

You don't have people calling you king without those in authority taking notice.

Depends on what is meant by politics. Did Jesus vote or campaign for anyone? No. Did Jesus run for office? No. Did Jesus try to change policy? No, but he set some long ago. Did Jesus teach people to follow the policies he had already set? Yes.

Did Jesus try to take over or impose policies? Well, he did drive the money changers from the temple area reserved for Gentile worship of God. Did Jesus try to involve himself in the Herodian or Roman governments? No, but he did make a distinction between paying taxes for secular government and giving regarding the policy he had set.

This is where the real rub comes. Many Christians seem to be confused about what constitutes proper involvement in government, and what proper government involvement is.

My take? Jesus came for a VERY SPECIFIC purpose that was totally independent of ANY political situation. He had no reason to be involved IN politics for His goal far superseded ANY political situation. Of course if you consider the Priests, Pharisees, Sadducees, etc. as appointed/approved by Rome, then yes, He did get involved in "politics"!
We on the other hand are commissioned to be salt and light, and if we lived as "society" tells us to, we would confine our saltiness & light to our domiciles AND the church building.
Can you just imagine our national status WITHOUT past Christians in public service, in whatever capacity?? In all likelihood we would never have survived to our 1st century had the early fathers confined their faith to today's demands!

How could you not consider the Priests, Pharisees, Sadducees, part of the political system?

My answer is "no". The reason is Jesus seems to have more or less ignored politics except touching on giving what is required of you and touching on religious politics. Even here Jesus did not get into politics per se but the parties claim to God.

I do; that's why I say He WAS involved in politics. Just not in the political process as we define it today!

As we define it today, it did not exist then.
