    The Practice of Puritan Meditation

    Life is busy. I've noticed this week just how much like Cliffsnotes time in Scripture seem to have become (looking through devotionals at a book store).

    I ran across this article and I think it a good reminder of the importance of prayer and meditation in the life of God's people. It is, of course, not limited to Puritans by any means. But that is the context of this article.

    Biblical meditation is vital. And it's the polar opposite of transcendental meditation.

    TM is the emptying of one's mind to see what the universe will put in it. Dangerous thing.

    Biblical mediation is the filling of one's mind with the word of God and recalling bits and pieces throughout the day - blocking out all else but God's Word, particularly singular verses or brief passages that God uses to teach you something new or reinforce something you've forgotten or neglected.

    Like the "train" of God filled the Temple in Isaiah's vision, meditation is the Word of God filling our minds.

    I sometimes find it difficult to make the time just to meditate on Scripture and pray. We have adult bible studies on Sunday and get together with a small group of friends during the week for a study. There is Wednesday night bible study. With job and family responsibilities as well it is easy to neglect personal time with God and His Word and substitute these group-corporate studies as this personal time.

    As a reminder to meditate, FAST.

    Nothing reminds you to think upon the Scriptures and God than when your body is craving and you are denying the lust of the flesh.

    God's Battle Plan for the Mind: The Puritan Practice of Biblical Meditation by Dave Saxton consists mainly of quotes on meditation from several dozen Puritan pastors, selected and arranged by the author with some of his comments added. I found this fairly thin book to be very helpful.

    I found the article for our Monday night study (yesterday) as it was a topic.

    I think I'll add @Deacon 's offer to mow lawns as several of us can help our brother in his meditation next week. That is what we are called to do, after all, to build one another up. :)
