We had ordered some products when it became clear they were manufactured and coming from China, so the questioned came up how safe are they. So we researched it to see and here is some of what we found..

"There is still a lot that is unknown about the newly emerged COVID-19 and how it spreads. Two other coronaviruses have emerged previously to cause severe illness in people (MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV). The virus that causes COVID-19 is more genetically related to SARS-CoV than MERS-CoV, but both are betacoronaviruses with their origins in bats. While we don’t know for sure that this virus will behave the same way as SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, we can use the information gained from both of these earlier coronaviruses to guide us. In general, because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures. Coronaviruses are generally thought to be spread most often by respiratory droplets. Currently there is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 associated with imported goods and there have not been any cases of COVID-19 in the United States associated with imported goods. Information will be provided on the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) website as it becomes available."Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

This could present a problem for package thieves.

since there seems to be a silence gap of such an important piece of intel the truth is probably bad news.

I have seen in the web rumor mills that the Wuhan coronavirus is able to survive on some surfaces - money, snail mail - for several days.

this seems unlikely but so does the fact that a chihuahua dog is a breed down extraction from canis lupus (wolf).

presumably if this is a highly developed bio-weapon, asymptomatic human carriers can also be developed to infiltrate a community as viral trigger bomb.

    yes, stranger than fiction.

Have read three or four articles on this with little real evidence. Most agree that it only lasts a few days on a surface and since it takes 2-3 weeks to travel from China to you so the chances are unlikely for any danger, but all fell short of being sure of the fact due to the fact we don't know the details of the bug.

dont buy food items from China. Otherwise it takes so long to ship, not a problem.

I have been thinking your bigger risk is eating out here. Food prep is done by people and if they are sick, your risks are much higher. Same for buying groceries where a person is hands on in preparations. Another problem is going to the doctor, they are much more likely to be exposed to the virus, doctors, hospitals, etc...all places where the sick are at.

It seems the coronavirus can last much longer than just a few days, and thats the question we have to find answers to.

Looks like it can take some time to come off the surfaces..

"The analysis of 22 studies reveals that human coronaviruses such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) coronavirus, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus or endemic human coronaviruses (HCoV) can persist on inanimate surfaces like metal, glass or plastic for up to 9 days"https://www.journalofhospitalinfection.com/article/S0195-6701(20)30046-3/fulltext

One thing to consider, hard plastic glass metal surfaces do not absorb moisture or absorb the virus, Surfaces which would dry it out like paper or cardboard or fabric and absorb the virus into itself are going to inactivate the virus quickly. Which is why mail and packages dont transfer a corona virus unless maybe you eat the packaging.

And warm humid air grabs onto virus particles and they fall to the ground, one reason why corona cold virus are not around in summer much, the other is UV sunlight's ionizing radiation sterilizes them. Sunlight is much more intense in the summer. I hope this corona virus reacts like other corona virus that cause colds and goes away as it starts warming up this summer.

There are much worse viral diseases.
Smallpox virus is kept in Russian and US labs for study.
Rather than destroy it completely they kept it alive.
Imagine if it was weaponized, today no one gets vaccinated for it.
Since it consumed all your internal organs and skin it must have been a bad way to die.

The history of smallpox extends into pre-history, the disease likely emerged in human populations about 10,000 BC. ... Between 20 and 60% of all those infected—and over 80% of infected children—died from the disease.

During the 20th century, it is estimated that smallpox was responsible for 300–500 million deaths.

I saw that they now think smallpox is more recent such as from middle ages time and came from an animal.

The packages are safe, there is no need to panic over this virus more than any other virus. After all, it only has a quarter of the fatalities that the flue has had this year but I don't see people freaking out about the flu....
