    A poll on Baptist schools and how you feel about them making available Harry Potter books to students.

    No, especially not at the elementary school level. I'm not a fan of Harry Potter. Whatever things are good, whatever things are pure....think on these things!

    While the content of the book is unGodly. I can't believe people spend so much of the time bashing it. Do we have a Christian alternitive to Potter.

    We need to quit complaining and do something to make a difference.

    I would say "no" since there are so many different concerns and issues regarding this book. And personally, I'm an HP fan.

    If a book is in the church or school library, then it has the appearance (real or not) that the church or school is condoning the content. Note: we have some "Left Behind" books in our church library and I still don't know how they got there.

    If they stock fantasy and fiction, they are free to stock the HP series.

    BTW, JGrubbs, I have read excerpts of Shadowmancer, and give it thumbs up. OTOH, I also read "Left Behind" and wasn't very impressed. I'm at somewhat of a miss as to why they were so popular. Then again, some people don't realize that "Left Behind" is sheer fiction.

    Seems to be an even split on this issue, for now. By Baptist schools, are you refering to college and seminary level? If so, my answer would be yes.

    JV - I was complaining about the LB series on doctrinal issues more than anything else. (Our church is not a pretrib dispy church and I wouldn't think that we'd have this stuff.)

    I would not send my children to a 'christian' school that gave them books on witch craft to read.

    These 2 quotes, taken together, should indicate there is no "Christian altenative" to Harry Potter. If any series of books were presented as such, they would probably generate the same kind of disagreement or hostility. We tend to think an idea must be doctrinally 'perfect' to be acceptable, and that's why HP, Left Behind, The Passion of Christ, and many more cause so much controversy.

    I said no for one reason. If they bann harry potter they will have to ban lord of the rings. Which also contains umm MORE witchcraft and vilence than Harry potter. [​IMG] Just my opinion

    LOTR wasn't written for children to begin with. Although there are some things in it that I think are objectionable, it is nowhere endorsing actual real-life occult arts as HP does. The main character, Frodo, of LOTR does no magic, and the power of the Ring is shown as evil and corrupting.

    Gandalf is not an occult wizard -- he is a type of angel. The word "Wizard" in LOTR is not the same as the word in HP. Tolkien later wrote that he regretted using that word because people misunderstood it.

    If they don't; then don't stock HP!
    If they do; then they probably should.

    I must agree with Deacon. If a Baptist parent wants to forbid their kids from reading JK Rowling, or CS Lewis, or L Frank Baum, that's their right. However, this isn't a Baptist Dictrinctive or Christian Doctrine issue, so I don't like the idea of a school, even a Baptist school, imposing one where it should be absent. If they want to refrain from a whole section (such as not carrying sfi-fi/fantasy in general) that's one thing. But to selectively omit books defeats the purpose of a library in the first place.

    John,
    I can see that line of thinking. However, some books really are worse than others. I think it can be legitimate to omit some books without omitting a whole category. For example, Phillip Pullman books are really dreadful and everything and then some that HP is accused of being.
