That's why we should discuss it. Not putting each other down.

Or y'all could just admit I'm right and you're wrong. :Biggrin

Seriously, though, iron sharpening iron depends on listening, communicating, and discussing disagreements.

Too often people just team up to force their views/ understandings. And they do this not by discussing a topic but by insulting the person holding an opposing view (I think we have all done this at times).

Both sides of a view can do that. But merely that explains not anything.
    The point of discussion.
Sure that is all a loosing view can actually do. If one side explains and the other side does not.

To be fair, often both sides explains but there is no communication. People tend to place opposing arguments within a non-opposing contexts to "prove" their opponent wrong. People tend not to hear or understand opposing views.

I think there is something natural to this. We all look at things through a lens of our own understanding and it is difficult to think outside of the boxes we create.

I tend to view personal attacks as frustration. But sometimes people just come here to attack k others (to bully others into accepting their understanding as truth).

We see this in expressions that are fallacies ("the plain meaning", appealing to the masses, begging the question, ect.). I suspect those who take that approach know, at some level, they are not able to defend their argument, get frustrated, and take the next natural step by attacking those who challenge their understanding.

But the problem is twofold. One may not be able to explain their view in a way that another can understand, but also one may be so indoctrinated in their own view that they are unable to understand an opposing position. Both of those lead to frustration and are barriers to communication.

Agreed. We should just set a few rules for discussion.

I’ll offer a few……of which I have been guilty of violating, usually responding to attacks.

    1. Be able to accurately state the others view without saying things like “what you really mean is….” And then insert a distortion of their views.

2.. Do not attribute motivation to their view. Don’t say, “you just believe that because you are a Calvinist… you’ve been brainwashed…. You are a liberal….. you ignore scripture.” Just assume they really believe scripture supports what they think and focus on scripture.

    3. Never say Joe and Angie would be ashamed of you…. (Jo Momma ANDGI Daddy)

    peace to you

Mortality of soul. The everlasting conscious suffering of the lost.

    Both of these are true.
