A Chosen People

1 Peter 2:9 indicates born anew believers are a chosen people. Some seem to think this refers to God's corporate election of the descendants (seed) of Abraham, i.e. the nation of Israel. However Paul makes clear, when viewed through the lens of the New Covenant, not all the descendants are "the chosen people." (Romans 9:6)

Using the Old Covenant as an illustration, based on Hebrews 11, we see those chosen to enter Abraham's bosom were believers, not necessarily of Abraham's blood line, but they had a faith like Abraham. (Romans 4:16)

So what Old Testament verse does Paul seem to be referencing in 1 Peter 2:9? Here is my answer:

Deuteronomy 7:6 NASB
“For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His personal possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth."

In addition, when we examine 1 Peter 2:9 we see only those called out of darkness and into His marvelous light are included in the designation of people chosen for His own possession. This clearly refers to New Covenant believers, as the Old Testament saints had to wait in Abraham's bosom to be made perfect following Christ's sacrifice.
