    I would like some recomendations on study Bibles. Could everyone tell me what study Bible they use and the pro and con on it? Im trying to find one for myself and can't really decide. On requirement I have at this point is that it is KJV. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

    I would recommend the Thompson Chain Bible. Dr. Thompson used the Naves Topical Bible when setting up his cahin reference system, so essentially what you end up with is a Bible and a Topical Bible rolled into one. There are also study helps for Christians of all ages. There are helps on Bible marking, mnemonics, bile studies of a select number of saints, etc...

    New Believer the best bible I have found lately is the KJV Student Study Bible. I love it and the price if very reasonible. Good luck on your search.I love this Bible

    Hi,

    I use and highly recommend the Ryrie's Study Bible. It has an outline of each book and it goes along with a theme. Many times each section of the outline starts with the same letter or something similar to that.

    I have been saved many years and I have used this study tool since I was a baby Christian.

    I have used the KJV Open Bible for many years and enjoy all the study tools it has to offer. I love it!

    The Old Scofield Reference Bible (1917) is about as conservative and ifb-friendly as it comes. Heavy dispensationalism. Great notes.

    Newer versions change text from the KJV1769 in some words and change major concepts in notes (like "ordinance" changed to "sacrament" - a nasty word for baptists) :rolleyes:

    For NKJV users, the New Geneva Study Bible is stong on reformed doctrine, but has the smallest print I've ever seen. Terrible for pulpit, but makes the old outdated archaic KJV revisions come alive! [​IMG]

    For NIV users, the NIV Study Bible has some of the best charts and maps I have ever xeroxed. But it's the NIV text, so that is a little weak. :eek:

    FWIW, the NASB Study Bible is an adaptation of the NIV Study Bible's notes to the NASB text. Since I've long considered the NIV's notes to be about the best I've seen, I consider this to be the best of both worlds!

    And I second Dr. Bob's recommendation of the New Geneva. It's just great.

    I have a hobby of collecting Study Bibles. I love to go to a book store and spend time just looking down that section.

    I agree with Baptist Mom. When I lead someone to the Lord I usually buy them a Ryrie Study Bible. I think its probably the best for outlines, references and footnotes. If you decide on this one, make sure you get the expanded edition.

    The Bible I carry with me and use most of the time is the Key Word Study Bible by Spiros Zodhiates. Its great for when you are out somewhere and need to look up something in Greek or Hebrew. He has his own dictionary on the original languages and his footnotes explain a lot on them as well.

    I will also recommend one that I feel is extremely good, and that's The Defenders Study Bible by Henry Morris. He does an excellent job with the footnotes, he is a brilliant theologian. I highly recommend that one.

    I think all the others mentioned are all fine, sometimes the Thompson Chain can be difficult to learn.

    Scofield is another one of my favorites, I would recommend the second edition.

    I would also say, if you can, to spend a little extra money and get a Genuine Leather, not bonded leather. The Genuine will last you a lot longer. You will get used to your Bible and know where things are, its hard to switch.

    I am KJV all the way so I would not use any other translation but I agree with Bob Griffin on the Old Scofield Bible it is great!

    My favorite is John MacArthur's Study Bible. Look at the "Top 10 Favorite Pastors" thread and you will see his name on many lists. While my Ryrie Study Bible is good, I often fine no comment or lacking comment on a particular verse, and go to my MacArthur Bible to find a "bulls eye" comment. You may want to get the cheap CD version which includes the excellent Logos Bible Software. Then there are hard cover, bonded leather and genuine leather, as the price goes up! It is in the NKJV translation. There are no other choices. I wish and wonder why John didn't do it in the NASB, since he claims that is the most accurate translation. Must have been high pressure publisher muscle :D . Anyway, here's the URL: MacArthur Study Bible

    I agree w/ many others, that the Ryrie is an excellent Study Bible. The Open Bible is good, and the "King James Study Bible" by Nelson Publishers is an excellent Bible as well except it's a little loose in the O.T. w/ "LORD" and "Lord".This Bible was originally put out by Liberty University. I think you can purchase these Bibles for an excellent price through www.scripturetruth.com. If you are interested in the NKJV MacArthur is an excellent Study Bible and the NIV Study Bible is great, too. Even if you don't like these MV's you can still find great help from the notes! ;)

    Like others have said, I highly regard the Defender's Study Bible by Dr. Henry Morris. Terrific notes. Also, I like the Old Scofield (again like others). Another one I like is the New Scofield (not the one from like 1978 where they change some words around, like Dr. Bob said) but the 1998 edition I believe...it's gone back to the genuine KJV text with good maps, notes, concordance, etc. And the Ryrie Study Bible of course. I know I pretty much parroted what others said but those are all good ones ;)

    This isn't KJV, but when studying the Old Testament, I enjoy the Hebrew Bible. It seems to be the strongest since it is the original manuscript which was translated by a bunch of Anglicans and authorized by King James. I like it because it is not a "Version" or a "translation". Since I was blessed with the opportunity to study Hebrew, I am able to translate for myself and learn more about the origins of the words.

    As for the New Testament, I can't help you since I think the KJV is a bad translation, twisted to fit Anglican Doctrine and authorized by a man who thought he was a god.

    I hear the heavy artillery zeroing in on your position. Advocating using the Hebrew and Greek because they are better than any English translation -- man, that will get the posse forming in Pensacola! :rolleyes:

    I would like to take a moment to thank everyone for their input and advice. I ordered and recieved today an Old Scofield Study Bible, thumb indexed, genuine leather cover, imprinted with my name. (I guess that means I got all the bells and whistles.) I got it a GREAT price from scriputretruth.com. It cost about half of what I saw in the local christian bookstore. The one I saw locally didn't have all the bells and whistles. If you are looking for a bible I would highly recommend scriputretruth.com. Thanks for the link to it RevKevin.

    I agree with wellsjs, the MacArthur Study Bible is one of the best on the market. Mine is used almost exclusively in my Bible studies.

    I do have a Ryrie Study Bible in the NASB that sees some use every now and then, but I stick pretty much to my MacArthur Bible.

    My wife uses the KJV Open Bible and loves it. It's tops on her list when recommending a bible to someone.
