RC Sproul and The Reformation Study Bible

Founder of LIGONIER MINISTRIES, a solid organization of Reformed Protestant (Presbyterian???) background.
His abilities to teach church history, philosophy and doctrine are phenomenal.

However recognize that he is not a Baptist and sometimes teaches things that may cause you to examine your beliefs critically.

R.C.Sproul is probably the best teacher I have ever heard, secular or otherwise, in terms of the gift of teaching. And I am not a 5 point Calvinist (nor Arminian).

The primary teachers the Lord has used in my study are R.C.Sproul, Chuck Smith, MacArthur, Oswald Chambers, & Spurgeon.

I thank God for them all.

I've seen the Bible but have yet to purchase one. The leather edition is beautiful and well-done. I have yet to decide between it and the hardcover. But it's a must-have as far as I'm concerned.

 

Hey, I know where you're coming from; R.C.'s one of my favorites too.
I didn't mean what I said in a derogatory way.

I enjoy his son's TableTalk magazine too.

However regarding baptism, R.C. is decidedly on the side of infant baptism.
He makes a good case for it too. (I just don't agree with him on this point...and some others).

I fully agree with you that we need to be watchful over everything we read/learn/do/say/etc.
Some just need reminding.

I personally do not like "Study Bibles" because the commentary is sometimes confused with the Word of Truth". How many times have I heard during discussion of a text, the comment, "Well my Bible says this about the passage...." UGGGGH!

Yes I love my new ESV Reformation Study Bible, it is smoother reading than my KJV and as far as a study Bible goes, better than any KJV study Bible that I know of. I still study from both, but for long sessions of reading, the ESV hands down.

NOTE: I like study Bibles NOT for the "comments" but for the alternate translations, outlines, maps, introductions to the books, definitions, cross-references, concordances and other very useful tools study Bibles generally include and the ESV Reformation Study Bible is THE BEST IMHO.

 

I really like the translation, and the Bible as far as study Bibles go is not too bad. Not as good as the MacArthur though, IMHO.

 

The Spirit of the Reformation Bible is a expanded version of the Reformation Study Bible and is better as far as lot more notes goes compared to the Reformation Study Bible .Its only in the NIV though at this time .

 

RC Sproul is one of the ablest teachers around (who is not Primitive Baptist, aherm).
Really, I try to time my noon breaks to 12:30 pm so I can listen to him in my truck radio.
He's currently teaching some parts of his "if God Exists, Then Why Are There Atheists" series, and doing a wonderful job.

 

From what I understand, Sproul and MacArthur are very good friends and do an annual conference together hosted by ligonier Ministries. This year the title is Bought With a Priceand will be on March 9-11 in Orlando Florida.

I have the older New Geneva Study Bible in NKJV and have had to resist the urge to get the ESV RSB. Does anyone know if the Spirit of the Reformation Bible will be in ESV?

 

Don't know, Dale, but you don't want to be without the ESV for long.

I may be looked at as a "liberal" in the "fundy" camp, but I can think and research for myself and I do like the ESV as I do the KJV. I think the ESV "reads" easier and according to conservative and Baptistic theologians it is an excellent translation. I'll take the experts at their word.

 

I have a RSB in the NKJV.Being of reformed theology I appreciate his work.

 

BTW, some of you brethren might want to check out the Matthew Henry study Bible. It's a really good work. It's only available in the KJV though. I really enjoy mine.
