“In Michigan, however, the practice of seizing homes over tiny underpayments of property taxes is likely to remain in place unless the courts step in. A bill introduced in the Michigan state House by Rep. Gary Howell (R–Lapeer) to reform Act 123 collected a handful of co-sponsors this year but did not receive even a committee vote.

Which means there will be more people like Uri Rafeali, who lost a home over an $8.41 mistake. His property, bought as an investment, is valued at an estimated $136,000. The penalty imposed by Oakland County was more than 8,000 percent greater than the underlying debt.”

Our country was founded on the principle of private ownership of property. Can't help but think our Founders would be packing their muskets at the thought of property taxes.

Why was he calculating his taxes instead of getting a bill from his county? They must have some real crooked judges up in Michigan to take property over a few dollars. Where I live, they have appraised my house for twice what it is worth so we have some crooked counties in Indiana also.

Yes, why did he calculate his interest, instead of paying the amount he was billed for? I'm developing a real peeve for reporters who don't ask obvious questions. (I'm guessing he paid an old bill that didn't include later interest, having nothing to do with him calculating anything.)

Michigan lawmakers should pass a retroactive law giving profits from foreclosure sales to the former property owners.

Such grave evil to rob people of their homes and residences. I am shocked this can happen in America. The man needs to sue Michigan and win. It is going to be dark to see what Jesus decides to do about this crooked thievery, at the Judgment if need be.

You know these crooks will give "contracts" to their pals who will kick back some of the money to the pols.
