On CNN’s Piers Morgan Live Tuesday, in a brief discussion about President Obama, Barbara Walters actually said, “We thought that he was going to be - I shouldn't say this at Christmastime, but - the next messiah” (video follows with transcript and commentary):
Her "next Messiah" metaphor aside - it brings me no joy, but it does bring a sigh of peace, just to hear someone admit that.
I don't want to start a fight here, but I truly feel that back when it was quite in the realm of possibility that Condeleeza Rice could have been president, it frightened the Democrats to death that they would not be the first party to raise up a female or a non-white president.
After all, their mantra about Republicans is that we hate women and a minorities. They could put up a minority for president, call Republicans "racist" for opposing him, and sit back and watch the guy win two terms with no merit other than being an untouchable candidate. Untouchable meaning any opposition for any reason all gets dumped into the "you're just a racist" category.
And they scrambled for someone for themselves.
And they found someone - he looks good, orates well with a teleprompter, his wife and girls are very pretty, he appears to be a good family man, and he tows the party line. In other words, he "looks" the part.
None of those things are qualifications for president.
But some of them do make for a great King Saul.
