Bedford Hills is a max facility for women; one of three in New York. There are two mindsets at Bedford Hills. One is of the prison staff who view their charges for what they are: criminals. Most of the are violent felons. In spite of what the story says, you don't go to BH for stealing silverware.

The other mindset comes from and advocacy group run by a Catholic nun who view the incarcerated women as poor children who have lost their way and just need a hug to be reformed. Balderdash!

My former daughter-in-law is spending 12 years there. She was not imprisoned for being misguided or making poor choices. She was sentenced for starting a fire that almost killed my wife, oldest son and me. Worse, she abandoned her 4 month old son in his crib while the house burned down around him.

These bleeding hearts fill her mind with the idea that she can connect with her victims and, in time, we will all come to love and embrace her as the poor little girl who society gang up on. They fill her mind with whimsical ideas that she can have a normal relationship with her son. She tried to kill him, his uncle and grandparents for crying out loud!

I believe it's a good policy. But only for women who are not going to pose a threat to a newborn. For example, if Padre's daughter-in-law had been hypothetically pregnant when she went to prison and had the hypothetical baby there, because she tried to kill her other child, that hypothetical newborn that was delivered in prison would have to be taken away from her. Period. End of discussion.

But for women who are not a threat to their own children and are pregnant in prison, they should be allowed a window of time to bond with the newborn, breast-feed, and tend to it before it is taken away from them and placed in a more familial environment.

It may just cause some of them to see a much bigger picture. Not saying that it will reform them or that it will lead to their getting out earlier, but tending to the baby born in prison might just make them take their eyes off of themselves.

2) Why aren't men afforded the same opportunity?

Well, when men start having babies while they are in prison, I'm sure that their rights to keep the baby in prison and bond with the newborn will be taken into consideration.
