Former Indiana Senator Dan Coats, whom I shook hands with once and voted for, was let go as Director of National Intelligence.
He allowed himself the surprising luxury of making public corrections of his boss on two or three occasions. Coats is a conservative Presbyterian but he is more of an establishment type of Republican who wanted to cover up the failings of the intelligence community and their nasty political involvement. I don't think that the problem was his ability to do the job but his inability to remain silent in public. It may have been fatigue from years of public service at a high level. He may have thought Trump personally unsavory and inexperienced. It is kind of a sad ending for a nice guy who worked hard. Coats should have given Trump the benefit of the doubt and reserved his comments for private meetings with Trump. Coats is a Christian and is very intelligent. He should have retired with more applause but he erred after all that hard work.
