Democratic Rep. Jeff Van Drew (N.J.), one of the only Democratic lawmakers to vocally oppose President Donald Trump's impeachment, is switching political parties, according to multiple reports.

Politico reported that "the question now was when, not if, Van Drew was joining the Republican Party."

The Washington Post reported:

Officials said Saturday that Rep. Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey, a vocally anti-impeachment Democrat, will join the Republican Party in the coming days following a Friday meeting with President Trump — a move that would put a political chill on the Democrats' expected vote to impeach Trump next week.

Two Democratic officials familiar with Van Drew's discussions in recent days said they believe he has decided to switch parties. The White House meeting was confirmed by a Trump administration official and one of the Democratic officials.
According to the New York Times, an announcement formalizing Van Drew's transition to the Republican Party will come sometime next week.

It is coming out that Russia and friends have (as we also have) interfered in more than one election in various countries. Why not even our own?

I am not a pro-trump person. I didn't like the alternatives offered by Hilary and friends.

But, God has the heart of the rulers in His hand and will turn it to what pleases His purpose.

Therefore, I offer my prayer of intercession for them.

At times it is as the Rabi in "Fiddler on the Roof" said, "May God bless and keep the Czar far away from us!"

Too bad it didn't work.

Good to see some Dems coming to their senses. I hear many Dem voters are going to be voting against their party because of being sick of all the corruption.

Is he a dimwit (about whom you wonder may have been bribed to switch) because of some specific knowledge you have about him? Or is it merely because he opposes impeachment and is somewhat conservative?

This looks like political opportunism. I'm generally not a fan of changing parties in the middle of a term because of the bait-and-switch "feel" of undermining the choice of the electorate. Some people may claim to vote for the person and not the party, but the exodus of this member's staff indicates that they weren't on board for him specifically but for him within the Democratic party. If anything, my preference would be for someone to leave a party to become an independent, at least in the interim.

I realize, however, that this is idealistic, and the practical benefit of being within a party is significant.

That being said, how much of a Republican is this guy going to be? Are we looking at a RINO scenario?

He wants to be re-elected, as he sees the disaster impeaching trump is gonna bring on the Dems. Many other Dems don't see that-yet. Most of the ones pushing hard for impeachment are those in "safe" districts who be re-elected no matter what, short of death. (until term limits are imposed.)

How safe are "safe districts? here's an example: Remember James Traficant, Dem from Ohio? In 2002, he was convicted of 10 felomies, including taking bribes, filing false tax returns, racketeering, & forcing his aides to perform chores on his farm & on his houseboat. He served a 7-year prison sentence & was expelled from Congress.

While in prison, he ran for his seat again, but lost. After his 2009 release, he ran again as an indy, and lost again, BUT NOT BY MUCH ! remember, this dude was a convicted felon !

IMO, once convicted & expelled from Congress, he shoulda been ineligible to run again. Had he not been outta office so long, he mighta well won re-election!
