Homeless moving to Denver for pot

It is being reported nationally that homeless people are moving to Denver because of the widespread availability of marijuana.

The folks in Colorado may have made a mistake. “I wish you all joy of the worm,” says the guy delivering a poisonous asp to suicidal Cleopatra in Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra. Now Colorado must cope not only with marijuana usage but also a huge influx of transients looking for a good time.

"The Salvation Army's men's shelter has seen an increase in the number of 18- to 25-year-olds. An informal survey found that about a quarter of the increase was related to marijuana, including some who moved hoping to find work in the marijuana industry."

In the past, the shelter's residents averaged between 35 and 60 years old. "Now we are seeing a much larger number of 18- to 25-year- olds."

An informal survey performed at the shelter suggested that about 25 percent of the increase in population was related to marijuana, Flagg said.

While many come to smoke without worrying about the law, others "are folks looking to work in the industry, a lot of them have an agricultural background," or other experience they expect will be in demand, he said.

They may also have a felony on their record that automatically disqualifies them from getting a job in the highly regulated business.

Those who do find jobs in pot shops and grow houses often don't earn enough to pay rent or buy a home in Denver's expensive housing market, Flagg said. They, too, can end up homeless.

The shelters don't require anyone to explain why they came to Colorado, but some do volunteer their reasons.

Fox is the only one carrying the story. They did on the street interviews with homeless people who said that they were just there for the drugs. I think that it is good that Denver is the possible homeless capital of the USA.
