HOSPITALITY TO ANGELS
Hebrews 13.2
In this verse Paul opens very important subject which is not much discuss in Christian circles. Paul shed a completely different light on the matter of hospitality, and it became no less important as anything else that make us true and faithful Christians.
The example of such unusual hospitality we can find in Abraham and his nephew Lot. Concerning Abraham, he welcomed three Great Spirits Who travel on the road passing his tent. Some scholars suggest that it was a habit of Abraham to do hospitality to strangers by providing them rest, water, food, and overnight stay in order that they can continue comfortably on their journey.
Did Abraham know Whom he is welcoming or not for debates, but the point is that Abraham feared GOD, had righteous character and merciful personality, and because of it GOD noticed him (Genesis 18.1-8). This is why Abraham welcomed Those Three Strangers with such compassion and love.
Lot is also very righteous and compassioned man and did really unthinkable when two strangers (angels of the Lord) disguises as ordinary men came to the city of Lot. When crowd of abominable people demanded these two strangers from Lot, Lot even offered them his daughters instead and beg them not to touch his guests! (Genesis 19.1-10).
It almost impossible to find such welcoming, hospitality, and protection as Lot did. He offered his own children, two daughters, to protect his guests. It is really hard to understand what drove Lot to such extreme, but whatever drove him make him righteous among great man of GOD.
For this reason, Paul warned as and at the same time urged us to be hospitable and welcoming to all, because we do not know who will come to us or visit us in our home, may be an ordinary man who need shelter or the angel of GOD.
Of course, we can say that it very dangerous to welcoming strangers into home and give them rest, water, food, and a bed to sleep, and this is true. We can use this argument in order to deny welcoming and hospitality to everyone we do not know. But at the same time, we may lose opportunity to welcome true angels.
Paul also may be talking here not about the Spiritual angels of Heaven, but about ordinary people. In some instances, ordinary people are called angels as well. In the Book of Revelation there is a Messages of GOD to the pastors of the churches in which GOD called each head of the church as an angel (Revelation 2.1.8.12.18, 3.1.5.7.14).
Generally, a word "angel" means a servant, usually a servant of GOD, a Spiritual being those lives in Spiritual Heaven. According to Revelation any man who serves GOD can be also called as an angel and serves GOD by serving the people of GOD.
THE LOVE OF MONEY
Hebrews 13.5
This is not first-time subject about money, and its greed is touched in the Holy Scripture. Here Paul made assertion and connected our struggle for wealth and earthly prosperity with the Words of GOD, 'I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.' (Genesis 28.15) (Joshua 1.5).
Yes, of course we are all need money to survive, and our labor takes the most of our lifetime. But the difference is between excess of our wealth or that we actually need is very thin. Money is like the drug to which many people are addicted, and they cannot stop making them, because addiction consumes entire life and it almost impossible to stop. It is driven by unstoppable obsession and completely possessing person under its influence.
Knowing very well this matter, Paul for this reason issued a statement, "Let your character be free from the love of money..." (Proverbs 23.4-5) (Matthew 6.19-21) (Mark 10.21) (Luke 12.33-34, 18.22) (1Timothy 6.6-19) (Hebrews 13.5) (James 5.1-6). Paul warned and reminded us that love for money is the root of all evil (1Timothy 6.9-10) and we must be very careful not to fall in this trap of greed.
Paul also added, "...being content with what you have." This means to bless, to thanks, to praise, exult and honor GOD for everything that He has given to us, because He gives everything as much as we need to survive on Earth, so the rest of our day we can dedicated to Him being free from collecting money and all other earthly vanities. The only treasure we should collect in this world, and all the time is the Spiritual Treasuries of Love, Faith, Compassion, Mercy, and Good Deeds.
GOD loves those who are rich in spirit and not in money only, and for this reason we should remember that Spiritual Treasuries will last forever and will bring us to Eternal Life. The physical material treasuries will only last with us as long as we live and will also go with the rest of physical material things, together with the happiness and joy of material possessions and wealth that we accumulate during out temporary life on Earth.
