Imam Snared in Terror Plot Admits He Lied to the F.B.I.

A Queens imam who became entangled in a terrorism plot against New York City when he warned one of the planners that he was under government surveillance pleaded guilty on Thursday to a reduced charge of lying to federal officials.

Ahmad Wais Afzali pleaded guilty to reduced charges in federal court on Thursday.

Fighting through tears, the imam, Ahmad Wais Afzali, spoke of failing his adopted country, a country his conviction will soon require him to leave, maintaining that he had no idea of the seriousness of the case when he told Najibullah Zazi in phone conversations that law enforcement officials were investigating him.

Perhaps he shouldn't have taken the plea and reduced sentence. If convicted.... at least he would have had a few more years here, even in jail, where we'd pay for his comfort and his family could visit.... and he'd be protected for a while from immediate threats of deportment and perhaps becoming a target in his own native country.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... OTOH..... a person without hope and a religion where jihad is the only way of salvation and suicidal homicide is favored and a brief sentence ending in deportment, his future does not look good. I doubt seriously that our prison rehabilitation program will change him for the better..... neither for us nor for him.

I say lets pray that through his current misfortune our God will bring opportunity for the message of the Word and Salvation to him.
