    What is a Christian?

Proverbs 6:16-19 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

How many of these actions are we avoiding? Are you guilty of even one?

    What is a Christian?

1 John 3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

1 John 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

Is there someone in your life that you absolutely despise?

    What is a Christian?

    American Tract Society Dictionary

James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

    What is a Christian?

It was being thrown back and forth whether a man with long hair looked like a christian. I was attempting to show that it is not long hair that determines whether a man is a christian or not. We certainly see God commanding some in the OT to have long hair.

The Bible says we will know the tree by its fruit.

And we also see in the scripture that long hair on a man is not a sin, but a shame

This is nothing but a legalistic humbug. Hair, schmair...Shame on us if we once again start judging people by the length of their hair.

I shave my head...does that make ME evil, or just bald?

You're not bald. Your hair-free on purpose.

Yes, I really believe that way. I'm not judging people by saying that they are not Christians because they have long hair. I'm just saying that an unsaved person would probably not think that a man with hair down to his shoulders was a Christian. I look at Guy Penrod who has long hair. He says he is a Christian and I will believe him I have no reason not to believe him(no one really knows but him and God). I just believe that we should represent God to the best of our abilities. Whatever we must do to achieve this goal should be done (whether it be short hair or long hair).

Honestly, I find the argument about whether an unsaved person views men with long hair as non-christians very humorous. The unsaved could care less, and I seriously doubt they go around trying determine Christian men by the length of their hair. IMO, it is the CHRISTIANS who judge whether a man is Christian or not based on the length of his hair. Think about it, do you actually know an unsaved person who knows the Bible well enough to know the verse stating long hair is a "shame"? I sure don't, not to mention the fact that all the "pictures" they see of Jesus and/or his disciples have long hair.

I would say that it has a cultural implication to it like dress and has to do with one's testimony to both the world and other Christians.

I would advise that we avoid the world's fads and styles for the express purpose of not making our appearance a stumbling block or unnecessary point of contention to someone else. Is it charitable of us to knowingly do something that unnecessarily offends? Wouldn't it be better to shave one's hair completely off than to offend a brother in Christ or worse yet a non-Christian?

The unsaved who know what a Christian should look like are exactly the reason we should be careful not to follow worldly fads in clothing, jewelry, or grooming.

The unsaved are constantly looking for a way to excuse or justify themselves through what they consider to be inconsistent behavior in Christians.

Did JESUS have long hair, as He is usually portrayed in pics of what men think He looked like? Not according to Bruce Barton, in The Man Nobody Knows. He said that according to history, most male residents of the Judea area kept their hair cut short in the Roman style, regardless of their race or culture, and Scripture says there was nothing special in Jesus' appearance to make men love Him.

Again, the whole hirsute thingie is a legalistic humbug.

Scarlett and Filmproducer are so RIGHT! [IMG] Just take me for example.....shoulder length hair looks good when I'm riding my Harley. It's not so long that it hids the "colors" on my back of the gang I'm in. I can smoke because the Bible doesn't say anything about smoking. In fact I believe it mentioned one place where Rachael "lit" off her Camel. As far as drinking...well it's ok as long as I don't get so drunk I can't get to Sunday School. After all man looks at my outside while God looks at my heart. I am glad that even with long hair, cigarettes and Budweiser God knows my heart is pure. ps. If I were shown by some "Legalistic" Baptist that I were wrong.....I would just change Bibles! [IMG]

    Amen, Shiloh!

Nature itself teaches it is a shame.

    Shiloh,

Read my post again... Be sure to read SLOWLY so that you can understand it. First of all, I said nothing regarding whether a man is to have long or short hair. Secondly, I indirectly referred to I Corinthians 11:14, in my initial post, hence the reference to "long" and "shame".

My point was that the unsaved care less either way. C'mon, honestly, how many unsaved do you know that would actually know about long hair being a "shame"? I, on the other hand, do know many unsaved, who, though they are not schooled in the Bible, know the story of Samson and Delilah. Not that he was a Nazarite, but that he lost his strength AFTER Delilah cut his hair. Why would they know, or really even care, a Christian man should have "short" hair? I stand by my OPINION that CHRISTIANS are the one who would judge whether one is a Christian based on hair length.

For the record, since long is not defined, nor is long hair a "sin", but a "shame", it is a matter of personal conviction. I am not about to judge another's Christianity, when I am not perfect, by far. I could care less how someone's hair is cut, or not cut, for that matter. Just as I could care less what type of music people prefer. It is between you and God.

I've often wondered if the long hair wasn't added by the Catholics or Eastern Orthodox to denote Christ as the man bearing shame?

Shiloh, whether I agree with you or not, this comment is offensive. Quote Scripture, fine, but don't add to it or give us your commentary. If you can't say something nice... oh never mind.
