Police say it was a dispute over a parking space at the apartments where the victims and the shooter lived.

A statement released by the Chapel Hill police said, “Our preliminary investigation indicates that the crime was motivated by an ongoing neighbor dispute over parking," adding that the suspect, Craig Stephen Hicks, who lived in the same complex, was “cooperating with investigators.”

The Chapel Hill police chief, Chris Blue acknowledged the speculation about a possible hate crime. “We understand the concerns about the possibility that this was hate-motivated,” Chief Blue said in a statement, “and we will exhaust every lead to determine if that is the case.”

It's usually a call for a hate crime when the perpetrator is white, and the victims minorities. I wouldn't be surprised to see this take that course.

Any hate in this case would be the atheist hating the Muslim faith. At least that's what the speculation was in the article I linked.

I agree. I've been on dude's Facebook page. He was a hard leftist, equal rights type, but he took good care of his .38.
