This story was making the rounds yesterday. One "news" outlet, TMZ, makes a mistake and others run with it. By the time the retraction is published the damage is done.

I believe the real intent of fake news is to get so called reputable news sources to report it without checking. Some of them may even know before hand that the story is fake, but they run it anyway, knowing they can retract. In spite of later retractions, the damage is done. And that's the plan.
The initial report and fanfare surrounding it is always louder than the retraction.
