The problem is that the senior politicians have an major advantage over other people

Those that have been in government a long time...

• have the great advantage of name recognition
• are savvy in their ability to use the government systems against their opponents
• are shrewd and cunning in their ability to manipulate the power the press
• have more legislative power: the more power they have, the greater they are able to bend the rules in their favor (that's why politicians and their families get rich)
• are able to spend your tax money in an attempt to gain votes
