The former veep's speech was factual and unemotional and certainly devoid of the kind of hokey, self-obsessed, campaign-style stuff like this, from Obama's address today: "I stand here today as someone whose own life was made possible by these documents. My father came to these shores in search of the promise that they offer. My mother made me rise before dawn to learn their truths when I lived as a child in a foreign land."

In terms of Obama's purported aim for his speech - to present a plan for closing Guantanamo Bay aimed at placating Congress - he failed. The reception on Capitol Hill was lukewarm with even Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

It is too bad that many have allowed the liberal media to demonize Dick Cheney. I always liked him and still think he would have made a much better president than George Bush.

He crushed Obama. Now if Obama could stop plagiarizing Bushes speeches and also admit he is taking on many of Bushes policies.

What's totally disgusting is the Cheney speech was scheduled weeks ago. Obama's clearly wanted to preempt the Cheney speech by scheduling this "hasty" speech of his own. And he talks about a Bush "hasty" plan. Clearly, he failed his objectives.

Actually I think this may have backfired on obama. All his lies were immediately refuted. One commentator said his speech sounded more like a lawyers summation than an address by the president.

I will say before, I didn't have much respect for Mr. Cheney. After seeing him speak out, I can honestly say that I have more respect for him now than I did before.

I believe he WAS the de facto president. In an case, Cheney is an evil old curmudgeon, likely a war criminal, and it is time for him to shut up and have a seat. He has far exceeded his 15 minutes, and the American people have rejected the failed GOP policies.

Like the ones that Obama is continuing like indefinite incarceration of detainees, deficit spending, leaving open the possible use of certain interrogation practices, buy large portions of private companies?

And it is quite dishonest to say "the American people". It misrepresents the amount of support for the President. He did not get every vote in America.

More like lying us into elective wars, using politics to impede science, suspending habeas corpus, etc. And President Obama has been clear that the United States will not torture.

No, it isn't. Collectively, we have rejected the GOP in 2008. Did you miss that? Of course we know there are diehard Repubs. However, a majority mandate of those voting was indeed given to the Democrats.

Using the word "collectively' doesn't change the facts.

I don't get it, why is the right raising such a ruckus and resisting Obama if Obama is plagiarizing Bushes speeches and taking many of his policies?

I don't recall anyone telling Al Gore to sit down & shut up when he came out with his "inconvenient" documentary, that was well beyond his 15 minutes. Old curmudgeons don't scare me, its the younger ones that do scare me. The younger ones think they know everything & believe they can easily fool everyone else.

I know you don't. But we all understand what we want to.
