Washington Calling: Who'll it be in 2008; on the money
    By Scripps Howard News Service
    November 7, 2004

WASHINGTON — Let the 2008 race begin: The possible presidents parade gets under way at the Republican governors' annual conference Nov. 17-19 in New Orleans.

The watch list includes Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, Bill Owens of Colorado, Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and George Pataki of New York. Longer shots are Ernie Fletcher of Kentucky and Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota.

Florida's Jeb Bush, the president's younger brother, ruled out a presidential run in 2008, and short of amending the U.S. Constitution, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger cannot run for president because he was born in Austria.

I will personally campaign against Huckabee if he runs. He is a dead bang loser for any office that he runs for in the future. The DEMS, if they are smart, will do to him what Republicans did to Dukakis in 88. Huckabee is soft on violent criminals and does not deserve to be president.

I am just about to the point of agreeing with Dick Morris tonight. He says the only person who has a chance of beating Hillary in 08 is a person who will probably not be nominated by the GOP: Rudy. It is not looking good in 08 friends. If a conservative runs on 08 and the war is over or conditions are more stable by then, America will be more willing to listen to a more liberal message (if it is packaged correctly, ie: send the celebrities back to Hollywood and shut Michael Moore up). I will vote for the conservative, but I predict the liberal will probably win. If the GOP runs a liberal like Huckabee and Rudy, and the war has been won by then, and the CP puts forward a candidate who will abandon the isolationist ideology, I might be persuaded to vote for them next time. But, they have to realize that just as America will not vote for those on the looney bitter left, neither will the consider those on the fringe isolationist right.

The picture does indeed look bleak in 08.

Mark my words, Hillary Clinton will never, ever win a presidential general election in these United States. It just ain't a-gonna happen, folks.

The best bet for the GOP, I think, would be nominate a northern conservative such as Governor Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota who would play well to the conservative base in the South and also be competitive in the north in States such as Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa.

The Democrats best bet, I think, would be Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana. Governors seem to be do best in presidential races and he also served two terms as governor. And he is a leader in the Democratic Leadership Council.

A Pawlenty - Bayh race would be very interesting and much more issue oriented than the 2004 race.

I think you are wrong about Hillary. I think she has a great chance of winning. I predict that if the GOP doesn't put forward a very strong candidate in 08, that Hillary would take the following red states and be elected President:

    Florida, Arkansas, and Ohio.

I think Ken's right. If it were Specter vs. Hillary, evangelical Christians would happily rally round the glorious lesser evil of Arlen Specter.

Excellent post Joseph - I don't agree with your scenario completely - but can easily see it going that way.

Jeb Bush as already said that he is not interested. click here

But I have a serious question. Are there folks on this board that think Condi Rice or JC Watts would get the black vote? LOL :D

If Hillary ran against Watts who do you think would get the black vote?

I don't think Condi will run. I have heard that she wants to run for a more local state office, like maybe Governor. Don't know a thing about Watts.

From the web site you provided:

I can't blame him for not wanting to run against Senator Bill Nelson. He would be soundly defeated.

No designs? Perhaps not now, but who knows in 2007?

That certainly clears it up for me!! [IMG]
Jeb is going to run, don't worry.

    Hillary would.

Rice or Powell would be great as GOP nominees. Giuliani has too much baggage to make it. For the liberalcrats I think another Billary show may be in the works. With some planning the GOP could easily lock up the presidency through 2016

    Powell, perhaps.
Rice, how could we possibly know?
She is a bureaucrat. She is not a politician.

I guess I am a little more optimisitc (beleive it or not) about 2008, but in agreement about the long run.

My scenario (assuming Iraq is settled) is that another quasi-conservative will be nominated to float on the wave of the evangelical vote. Hillary will not run until 2012 as a result when she will beat whoever the Republican president will be. It will be soemthing of a repeat of the Bush/Clinton election of 1992.

    I have a suggestion:

Instead of preparing ourselves for the pro-abortion, liberal candidate that the GOP expects us to support in 2008, let's begin NOW to make it clear that we will not take it again. Otherwise, we've simply given up and may as well burn our voters registration cards. Right?

I really believe, Pa. Jim, that Evangelical Christians got some notice this year. 78% of registered voters in Georgia came out to vote and the AJC is saying it was because of the marriage ammendment.

Nope... I will NOT give up voting. It's my obligation.

    Diane,

I did not mean to imply that we shnould not vote. Simply that sooner or later we should stop voting for those who are against us.
