[Administrator: the thread started with a poll regarding whether or not different members of the Baptist Board believed in a literal or figurative six-day creation or if they believed something different entirely. The relevant responses follow.]

From Genesis alone, it's obvious that it is not literal, but figurative.

God tells Adam that he will die the day he eats from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Adam eats, but lives for many years afterward.

It's a figurative, spiritual death Adam suffers by eating and becoming like God. He can know good and evil, but he can't be truly good.

Which is why Christ's death didn't save us from a physical death (which we all have to suffer) but rather a spiritual death.

    Adam became like God? Hardly!

And physical death is a process. The process started the day of disobedience.

If physical death were not part of it, then not only would physical animals not have had to be sacrificed, but Jesus would not have had to die a physical death. Paul was very plain about that in Romans 8:10: But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.

    "Body dead because of sin."

    That's pretty plain.

And yes, the world was created in six literal days somewhere between six and ten thousand years ago.

The only thing that matters to me is that God is the Creator, and when I see Him I'll ask Him how He did it and how much time it took.

Like the vast, vast majority of biblical scholars, I believe that the two Creation accounts in Genesis are figurative. I do not believe, however, that they are allegorical. I don't think that each "day" in the Genesis accounts corresponds to a phase of Creation (nor do most biblical scholars).

I don't see creation as being of that of the physical earth (though I once did). I don't have time to repost everything and theres not too much for me to "explain" here because I'm only catching a glimmer of seeing the creation story of speaking of a spiritual truth verses anything speaking of a material earth (hope I put that right). But I just wanted to tell you we christians do not see eye to eye on everything regarding interpretation, but thats nothing new

But truthfully because I only have a "glimmer" here I'm not holding on to what I once regarded but looking forward to seeing something new inside the same framework of the creation story (as some call it). I personally have no problems with science except that I believe that "the nothing" something comes from is the invisible God. I neither have an opinion on how long it took God to create the earth and don't care too much because I don't look at the bible as a science book testifying to the material realm, but some think so and to each his own. I share on how it reads to me and others do the same.

At this time I can't say a thing yet, I've only collected pieces here and its not enough to bring to the table to even be considered but if or when the pieces of the picture come together I'll let you know, till then I'm just going to say I differ as I'm led in a different direction as of right now but I can't explain as of yet.

Here are some times Jesus Himself referred to something in Genesis 1-11 -- and I think you will find that He nowhere indicated that it was anything other than historical truth.

    Matt. 19:4-6
    Matthew 23:35
    Matthew 24:37-39
    Mark 10:6
    Mark 10:7-9
    Mark 13:19
    Luke 11:51
    Luke 17:27
    John 8:44

Including the writings of all the New Testament writers and excluding Revelation, the New Testament contains 59 references to Genesis, every time treating it as actual, historical fact.

I'll go for the ONE day creation. and that is Scriptural.

(GENESIS 2:4) These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, (KJV) "DAY" "DAY" "DAY"

(ISAIAH 46:10) Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure (KJV)

From ancient times, like the CREATION STORY, not yet done when Isaiah recorded these verses.

(ISAIAH 30:26) Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the Lord bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound. (KJV)

This has to be the day of the cross when God heals, and this day has to be seen as a week in similitude. Like 7 days in Genesis.

(DANIEL 8:26) And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days. (KJV)

The Evening and Morning were the first day
The Evening and Morning were the Second day
The Evening and Morning were the Third day.

The Same Evening and Morning is all seven days of the creation story. In the DAY the Lod God made the earth and the heavens. Day Day Day.

The day as 3 pictures, as EVERYTHING shall be established by the mouth of two or three witnesses.

First witness is the day as 4 6-hour periods, as 4 beasts with 6-wings.

Sunset to Midnight. "Let there be light."= I am the True Vine, I am the Good Shepherd, I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. In My Father's House are many mansions. Etc, Etc.

First seal is the White horse, sin seen as clouds in Isaiah 44:22. Jesus coming with the sin of the world is the White horse coming in clouds. Jesus said what He would do, Now He has to go and do it=Goes forth conquering and to conquer. Death, sin and hell is what the great battle of God almighty is all about=Armageddon.

Midnight to sunrise. People as waters, 144 with Judas (seen as a wall in Rev 21:17. measured angel status by adding the cubit, multiplied by 1,000 by Deu 1:11) are the waters above the Firament (Jesus). sinners are the waters under Jesus.

Sunrise to noon. Waters gathered together=all people into the Body of Christ. "With His stripes we are healed. Third angel sounds, Star Wormwood falls=Similitude for Judgment falling on Jesus during this time period.

(AMOS 5:7) Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth, (KJV)

Third seal is the black horse, Balances is the Judgment. a measure of wheat for a penny, three measures of barley for a penny. a penny was likened to a day's wage. the day as one picture as wheat, as three pictures as Barley.

Fourth day is noon to sunset, the Good ground in the parable of the sower. Disciples were the seeds that fell by the wayside in the first time period. the day as 3 pictures, brings forth 30 fold, 60 fold, 100 fold.

Creates two great lights, Sun seen as throne in Psa 89:36, Darkened by His death, Moon seen as the Establishment of the Throne in Psa 89:37. turned to blood as the blood of Christ establishes the throne.

Fourth seal is the pale horse, death followed by hell as Jesus dies from noon to sunset and descends into hell.

Fourth angel sounds and a third of the sun and a third of the moon is smitten, or one of the three pictures is fulfilled.

Song of Solomon 4:1 shows the Goats as hairs, 4:2 shows the sheep as teeth, Sunrise to noon at the Judgment they pluck the hairs from His cheeks, or SEPARATES the sheep from the GOATS.

The Head of Christ is God, Jesus had no where to REST HIS HEAD, Jesus takes away the sin of the World, Now He can REST HIS HEAD, And on the Seventh day God rested. And He rested with mankind. "Where is the place of My rest?"

(ISAIAH 66:1) Thus saith the Lord, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? (KJV)

The day of the cross is as 7 time periods, as a house built, here is the house, and God's word built it.

(PROVERBS 9:1) Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars: (KJV)

Genesis: Out of nothing, the world was formed in six literal days of
speech. What a staggering, incomprehensible notion for the mind of
man. Yet, merely the voiced opinion of God!
"Let there be . . .": Three ridiculously simple words. Yet, once
they are uttered by the Omnipotent -- things become! Voidness
becomes matter. Matter becomes life. And even darkness becomes
"And there was . . .": The suffix to the Creator's prefix. The point
at the end of God's exclamation! The obedience to His command. The
time frame: "Now!" Immediately! No evolutionary process. No
    million-year gap in time.
"And the morning and the evening was the (1rst, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th,
and 6th) day.": God spoke it all together in six literal, twenty-four
hour days. The world, and all life within it was created in 144
"And God saw that it was good.": When God speaks, things happen! Not
mediocre things, but perfect things. "Good" things. They are good
because they are ordained by a sovereign Creator who is correct in
His decisions, righteous in His judgements, and perfect in His plans!
    God still speaks. Listen . . . .

Can we apply our physics . . .our logic to a supernatural God?

Ken Burton stated that creation was one day and then he tried to
what he meant. I think you are stretching Bible pretty far in your
    argument, Ken.

‘Yom’ or ‘day’ means in Hebrew exactly what it means in English: a
hour span of time unless the context demands otherwise, as when it is
followed by a preposition (or the equivalent in Hebrew) such as ‘in
day of the Lord.’ The days of Genesis 1 are not only numbered as an
ordinal series (denoting an order) but are EACH marked by ‘evening
morning’, meaning they each had their own evening and morning.

Exodus 20:11 is very explicit about the Sabbath being holy to God
because “in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth,
sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day.
Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”

I don’t see how much more explicit a statement could be made!

Michael: it’s hard to capture the immensity of God speaking and it
happening NOW, isn’t it? I enjoyed reading your post. I would
one thing: the light was not made from darkness, but from energy
itself, thus dispelling the darkness. But Amen to the rest of your
