Air America Radio Files for Chapter 11
    Oct 13 4:22 PM US/Eastern

    By SETH SUTEL
    AP Business Writer

    NEW YORK

    EXCERPT

Air America Radio filed for bankruptcy reorganization Friday, in the latest patch of turbulence to befall the liberal talk radio network that launched two years ago headlined by the comedian and author Al Franken.

The network will continue to operate with funding from its investor group, led by RealNetworks Inc. CEO Robert Glaser, who owns 36.7 percent of the company, and two other former board members.

The company also named a new CEO Friday, Scott Elberg, a radio executive who joined the company in May 2005 following stints at the New York area radio station WKTU and other places.

Air America had dismissed rumors just one month ago that it was planning to file for bankruptcy protection. Spokeswoman Jaime Horn said Friday the filing became necessary only recently after negotiations with a creditor broke down.

Court documents showed that MultiCultural Radio Broadcasting Inc., a creditor with whom the network had tussled in its early days, had Air America's bank accounts frozen.

The filing marked the latest setback for the liberal talk network. This April, Danny Goldberg stepped down as CEO and was replaced by an interim chief executive from a management consulting firm.

The socialists already have CNN, MSNBC, CBS, NBC, ABC, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Democratic Party, the Republican Party, the Green Party, et al - how much more do they need to get their message out?

That is one reason that the Dem's are so in need of getting back in power. The fairness doctrine that they will surly try for will insure they won't have to try to compete fairly in the competition for the airwaves.

I tuned in my XM radio to channel 167, and AirAmerica was still on the air. Guess I still get to hear Sam Seder in the morning, especially today as it is casual shabbat. Then of course there's Al Franken :)love2: ) at noon.

The reason so called "liberal" talk radio has been unable to succeed is primarily because the product they are selling doesn't sell well.

IOW the message is getting out and is being rejected. :BangHead: Reminds me of the 2000 and the 2004 Presidential elections.

Maybe the goverment should require a "fairness doctrine" in our churches. My would you believes some churches teach that salvation can only be recieved by grace thru faith. Now how closed minded is that.

The first amendment gives you the right to free speech. Air time IS NOT free! It must be paid for. (those electricity bills are very very high!) If a man owns a radio station, than he has the right to put on anybody he well pleases. Likewise, when a group own a church (building) they have the right to preach any message they desire.

A man might own a radio station, but the frequencies, which are limited in number, belong to the public. He merely leases the rights to broadcast; therefore, theory has it, the public can require that he serve the public by being "fair".

Hey Salty! I was in Syracuse the week before last. That's a pretty city you got there.

You know, I don't recall Dems being surly. I've used a variety of adjectives when discussing and/or describing Dems, but surly hasn't been one of them.

And how in the world would a "fairness doctrine" by any means "insure they won't have to try to compete fairly in the competition for the airwaves."? Check your rocker -- I think you fell off.

I've always expected Air America to go belly up, barring perennial handouts from somebody with bottomless pockets. Regardless of whether or not you favor Socialism and homosexuality (their unending themes), almost nobody is depraved enough to feed on that constant drone of hate, hate, hate that they spew for hour after hour. (Ever listen to Michael Malloy? He makes Hitler sound like Edith Bunker.)

And their humor isn't even funny nine times out of ten.

When Katrina did New Orleans in, I jokingly told my wife "they'll probably blame the hurricane on Bush." Behold! I turned on the radio the next day and that's exactly what they were doing, over and over again. Because Bush didn't support the Kyoto Protocol, he was responsible for global warming which, in turn, caused Katrina and the destruction of New Orleans.

If Air America were the best the devil could do to oppose all that is biblical, we'd have the Millennium all set up within eighteen months.

Thank you for your kind response.

The fairness doctrine is the liberals way of leveling the playing field by enacting a law requiring, for instance, equal time for some liberal to rebut Rush Limbaugh every day he's on, minute for minute.

Re-read the post. He was saying "surely" but left off the "e".

Dumb idea, Air America. The odds of finding someone with an IQ in three figures, who listened to talk radio, were pretty slim.

Obviously. I should have used a tongue-in-check smiley, but thought the humor was, well -- obvious.

Next time I'll spell it out where it could be more easily understood by ... oh, why?

Not to mention finding talk radio hosts with 3 digit IQ's.

What I liked best about Air America was the noise of sound equipment falling, people tripping over the cables and such as that.

I listened to Err America when it first aired in the city where I lived at the time. The radio station that bought into it lost all their veteran on-air personalities, all their advertisers, etc., because they put this trash on the air instead of the semi-quality programming they already had. Now, they are bankrupt as well.

I said from day 1 that Airhead America would be a disaster.

But then, in all fairness, it wasn't really much of a prediction. After all, who wants to listen to liberals whine for three hours.

I can't remember the guy's name, but I remember when President Reagan died, one of the hosts (and, at that time, he was on Sirius) was really cruel, not just to a great man, but to all of the people who suffer with the awful disease of Alzheimers'. I remember thinking, "if this is the best they've got, they're in big trouble".

When you listen to the good talk show hosts, Michael Medved, Michael Reagan, Glenn Beck, Janet Parschall, Michael Smirconish, etc, the reason they're successful isn't that they're charming or funny, but that they have ideas and can defend them.

All the libs at Airhead America can do is to attack Republicans and tell us how they're racists and want to kill children and old people. That gets old pretty quickly.

I make myself listen to Garafalo, & even Rhodes every now and then. Can't see the appeal in either one. Can't see the appeal in the negative drumbeats.

The problem is nobody will sponsor it. What does that tell you ? If money came in, radio stations would carry it. Despite everyone's stupid insults, the reason Air unAmerica fails is they have no audience. It's not because of a bunch of brainwashed retards.

And the fairness doctrine would have to be struck down in any high court. Good luck getting that one thru in the next 6 years.

    No listeners.
    No ideas.
    No solutions.
