Talk about a scare tactic title!

We have been grateful for socialised medicine. My daughter-in-law has leukaemia. She has been in and out of hospital since December 20th. She is now entering her maintenance stage of treatment. I would guess that in the US her bills would be approaching a million dollars.

    Their cost, total? Around $1500.

There are concerns, sure - but socialised medicine is not necessarily the end of quality health care.

Americans don't even know what socialism is. As a matter of fact, they don't even know what democracy is.

    Cheers,

While I'm sorry your daughter has cancer, I'm not sure I understand how that means that we should accept this takeover of our healthcare.

My only point is that these scare tactics about socialised medicine can be just that - scare tactics.

That is evidenced by the title of this thread.

Socialised health care can result in the very best of medical care without the astronomical personal costs. There is no way they could have paid the million dollars that the free-wheeling US health care would have cost them.

Yes, socialised health care has risks and flaws. It is not perfect, but it does not mean amputations without anaesthesia either.

And how do you know that giving up the quality and availability of our healthcare, not to mention inviting our government to completely ignore the Constitution that limits it, is not something to be scared of?

Then why is Great Britain slowly returning to privatized care? Why do so many people from those countries you believe we should emulate come here for care that they can't get at home? Why do people under the system you tout in Canada have to enter a lottery just to be guaranteed the right to their own doctor?

And yet, between insurance companies, personal savings, and charities, people do it every day.

Like I said, I'm sorry your daughter has cancer, but I'm not sorry enough that I'm willing to give up my own family's health care.

Socialism - a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.

Democracy - government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system

I'm an American. I know what both of these are. Do you have any other irrelevant comments for us?

Wow! Where did I say I emulate any nation's health care system? Where did I say that I tout Canada's system.

All I said is that from personal experience socialised health care can do an excellent, top notch job.

I would not want to have an 'elective' need here by any means. The waiting list can be months long. It is hard to get non-emergency care at times.

It would hardly, even in the worse case scenario, result in the scary, misleading title to this thread.

Well then you need to read past the title before commenting so as not to look foolish. From the article:

We need socialized health care in this country, and I bet we get it, whether or not you like it. It is the number one voting concern I have.

Not in the current form it has been determined. In this country it is not constitutional to make someone by some product or service. Many states have filed suit against this single provision in the current health care legislation. It will most likely be defeated. Considering how the current legislation is set up it would destroy the whole.

Add to that many states are looking also at nullifying it. A number of States will simply not put it into place. This is simply not going to be accepted.

Perhaps, after the law suits are filed and examined, we will be able to come up with real health care reform.

I'm not particularly in love with the present health care law, but I hope it is something that the future leaders, democrat, republican or even independents can build upon to improve our system.

It can be improved without going to extremes like socialism. But those who hate capitalism use it for an excuse rather than a need.

Did you know that for all the talk about the bad old insurance companies not covering pre-existing conditions that the government plan will also not cover pre-exisiting conditions?

It seems that after all the promises - they figured out that the money authorized for the program won't last until 2014 if they cover the pre-existing conditions.

2014 is the year that the government will make the insurance companies do what the government said is the right thing to do - but now that they are paying for it - find that they can't do themselves.

    That's nice...

But then again they are not taking your money without your approval - and they are not making you join against your will - and they are not taking away your other alternatives - are they?
