Have you seen clips of the interview in which an Irish anchor challenges and interrupts Bush? There's more to the story, as Washington Monthly's Kevin Drum observes:

"It appears that the White House is furious over the interview that Carole Coleman did with George Bush on Irish TV Friday night. In fact, they're so furious about the fact that Coleman dared to follow up with critical questions that they've withdrawn a planned interview with Laura Bush.

"But here's the kicker: all the questions were submitted in advance. Bush knew exactly what she was going to ask.

"It's unbelievable. We have a president who apparently feels uncomfortable doing an interview with a foreign journalist unless he knows beforehand what she's going to ask, and then behaves childishly when she actually follows up and insists on genuine answers to the pre-scripted questions instead of the usual talking point pabulum that the American press laps up. How dare she interrupt the president of the United States and demand real answers!

"Can you imagine Tony Blair refusing to do an interview unless the questions were submitted in advance? Or John Kerry. Or Bill Clinton. Or George Bush Sr. Or Margaret Thatcher. Or pretty much any other world leader of the past 20 years?

The woman journalist was clearly rude to the president. Her boss should reprimand her for her poor performance in such an important event.

ASLAN appears to be the only person in the US or Ireland who would elevate Carol Coleman to iconic status.

She lost her position as RTE's Washington correspondant, and I am not even sure she works for RTE any longer.

And as Joseph said, Bush was the clear "winner" in the interview.

I am just guessing, but my guess that she is elevated to iconic status has more to do with an opinion of the president, primarily based on a liberal attitude, than whether or not Carol is a good interviewer.

If she were interviewing a bleeding-heart liberal, then she would be a witch who was trying to bring him down.

Although ASLAN and others must be disappointed that RTE has removed this paragon of journalistic virtue and professionalism from her Washington position (and possibly from RTE totally) they can get their daily dose of anti-Bush and anti-American comments by going to

    RTE

The best time to hear the America bashing anytime a major US story breaks, is by listening to "Morning Ireland" from 2.00-4.00 AM EDT and "Today with Pat Kenny" from 5.00-7.00 AM EDT.

If you miss these fine programmes, you can listen to them later by following the links to Radio One.

Surely there is someone there who can come close to Carole's courage and bravery.

Perhaps, with her feelings about President Bush, she can get a job with CNN.

Again a lot of you are off the richter scale and
perhaps bring the scales more into balance. I have
been fair to look at both sides. God only knows if
she was kicked down because of a poor attitude
or because powers that be kicked her down or a
    combination of both.

We do know this..her interview with Colin Powell went
fine...her interview with Bush did not.

She does pray and prayed before the interview at the very least she should be given mercy for that.

I am not disapointed by anything I parsed and presented a fair poll that gave both sides opportunity to express...so should we let the poll
    take its course.

The salient point is how does this President treat the press and how does the press treat this Presidnet. It seems to me he has his favorites or
none at all and our free press really does not
press him much (no pun intended).

So for the record I never said she was an Icon
I saw that both at times had their moments of
    prickly behaviour. imho

For the record in the Airline Industry I worked
with Irish women they are very direct and tough
but with a heart of gold.

The poll so far, would like to see more response
now that we have the MP3 and more information
    for, against and in between.

    Was she fair
    Choose 1
Yes she did her job 62% (5)

No, she was too pushy 38% (3)

Should she had been more deferential
    Choose 1
Yes, this is the leader of the free world 38% (3)

No, everyone is accountable especially world leaders 62% (5)

Should Journalist submit their questions in advance to the President
    Choose 1
    Yes 25% (2)

    No 75% (6)

I think if anything the poll showed a positive
about questions should not be submitted in
    advance...that is heartening.

    Sincerely
    Aslanspal

Gotta tell you...the interview with Bush went wonderful for Bush. She set him up beautifully to present all of his talking points in a manner that made him and his ideas look good. Perhaps, you mean it did not go well because she was not able to outwit him and frustrate him nor his agenda? My guess is that she was kicked down because she made him look great. Who knows? I would love to see more interviews like that, personally.

I found Carole Coleman a very poor representation of the Irish people I have been living among for 11 years.

How do you know she truly "prays"? She perhaps said her rosary before she did the interview, or knew America well enough that she knew this would get them on her side. Something, BTW, that President Bush is not above doing.

Since RTE is blatently anti-Bush, why would they take away this position in Washington for her views? Instead, she would have been promoted to news anchor, if it was based on her views.

Sorry Joseph, in case you can't tell, I DO NOT like this woman or her views.

Perhaps that was the case Joseph. I am not sure she has been fired from RTE, but have not heard hide nor hair from her since the Laura interview cancellation. She as spitting fire on the news that night. The Irish media we so desperate to criticise Bush that one of them used a super zoom lense and caught him pulling the curtains of their room in the castle and you could see his vest (t-shirt). It ran on the front pages of the tabloids the next day.

I agree with you, President Bush made Carole look like the "Irish colleen" that she is.

You should have seen her interview with John Kerry. She was practically drooling in awe and admiration of this man who was going to bring America back into line with her personal agenda.

Wanna know why I don't watch all the talking head shows like Chris Matthews et al?

    Interrupting. Talking over. Shouting.

Interrupting is #1 and #1 on the rude and disrespectful list regardless of the parties involved.

I do have to agree with you about RTE. Philadelphia has a very large Irish population and there is a station, WYBE, that caters to the Irish and Irish-Americans here.

The broacast the news on RTE every night, as well as "Out of Ireland", a recap of Irish news and entertainment stories.

Both are unabashedly anti-Bush and much on the RTE is blatantly anti-American, which is a little odd, since I still remember from my childhood that virtually every Irish home I went into had a portrait of John F. Kennedy over the mantle.

You can also watch RTE news online at the link above.

Next time a major story breaks from Washington, have a look.
