    Mike McK,

"Cool. You're a great poster on Crosswalk. Welcome to BaptistBoard."

Thanks, and I appreciate that. We disagree on one topic, but on tons of others we're side by side. And I appreciate your commitment to Gods word, even when we disagree.

    "Iron sharpens iron".

We probably sharpen each other quite a bit when we disagree.

    God bless,

    Mike

I'm a singer. I went to school for opera, and still do that, but lately have gotten into blues and jazz.

Other instruments, though -- well, my left hand is about worthless when it comes to playing, so that's out.

That is great you can sing opera. That is not an easy thing to do. You are really talented.

I'm a former percussionist. In fact I tell everyone that I used to play on the "line" when I went to school--the "drum line" ;) :D [IMG]

I like Norman Blake a lot. He's got a few albums out with Tony Rice, don'tcha know.

The latest is High Lonesome Cowboy, with Peter Rowan, Don Edwards, Rice, Blake, and Billy & Brin Bright. Excellent record, very mellow, low on flash, high on substance.

Oh, and I forgot a few.......

    Doc Watson
    Merle Travis
    Mark Pruett(sp?)
    Jerry Garcia
    Stuart Duncan
    Doyle Lawson
    Roy Nichols
    Jimi Hendrix
    Mozart

    More to come.......

I do a little singing myself. I lead worship on a regular basis and have sung in every size group there could be, as well as a couple solos. I don't usually consider myself a musician, I guess because I am not even that great of a singer. I sing from the heart though and I think that is what is important.

    Hey Bro. Curtis,
I was a big Jimi Hendrix fan at one time. There were songs, like "Machine Gun" (live version) that I could just never figure out how he made all the sounds with the guitar, especially in the time he was playing. Now though I mainly stick with Christian music as my time is so limited I would rather be uplifted with Christian thought and words then listening to something that God doesn't get glory through. I plan on singing,
    "The Anchor Holds" next.

    In Christ,
    Brian

I still listen to Jimi every once in a while. I consider him up there with Beethoven, or Brahms, as one of the greatest musicians that ever lived. His guitar playing bordered insanity, humanly impossible, just like the great composers, way ahead of his time. His music is a window to a tortured soul. Nobody will ever replace him. Over 30 years dead, and still untouchable.

I listen to all kinds of music, and it depends on my mood. But if it's not a sin to watch an athletic event, and admire the strength and body control involved competitive sports, than it can't be a sin to listen to a musician who plays well.

    And Jimi played well.

But I do not endorse his lifestyle.

But also, when I read Huckleberry Finn, I don't dwell on Mark Twain burning in hell forever. When I watch a dead actor on TV, or a movie, his eternity doesn't enter into my mind. Should it ?

I believe it's the same with music. We exalt Johnny Unitas, but we don't know that he was saved. We talk about Ted Williams being a hero, but don't mention his eternity.

Should we only listen to, or watch, or engage in entertainment that is Christian, and ignore ecverything else ? Is it wrong to look for beauty in Jimi Hendrix's music ? Is it wrong to enjoy a hockey fight ? Should we turn off sports and music, and movies all together ?

    Serious questions.

Hi again Brother Curtis, I hope I didn't sound judgmental, because that was not the intention. I basically agree with what you said. I really love a good electric guitar jam, no matter who is playing it. Not many good jams in Christian music. There are a few here and there but not that match the intensity or skill level of a Hendrix, Page, or Santana. What I was saying with my last post was for me at this time of my life the Christian music does more for me. If I had time I would probably listen to some of the old classics more often. I was a Black Sabbath fan at one time. I don't think even with ample time I would listen to them anymore. Well, there was a song named "changes" that I would listen to, well and maybe "Iron Man", for the guitar jam at the end :D . Also, I sing to each of my kids when I put them to sleep at night and I often sing non-Christian love songs like "If" and "And I love you so". I am not at all legalistic, though I have a feeling our conversation here will meet with some dispute.

Take care and thanks for your comments on your last post [IMG]

I'm sorry that my post was so defensive, I didn't at all feel like you attacked me, those are serious questions I have. The Holy Spirit is alive and well inside me, and he jumps up and down when I am not in God's will. I don't feel moved by the Spirit when I listen to a loud electric guitar. If I only listened to Hendrix, then I can see where that would lead to a place I wouldn't want to be. But I listen to everything, and see a lot of beauty in Hendrix, and like you said, Jimmy Page and Carlos Santana. (I met Mr. Santana, many years ago, in a club in NY City, and he was a very generous person.)

I am working on a Guitar, mandolin, & violin version of "It came upon a Midnite Clear" that I will perform in church at our Christmas music service. I am writing all the parts, and am playing the mandolin for it. It's all-acoustic, and I am really enjoying the work involved. I have also done arrangements for "Sweet Hour of Prayer", "Great is thy Faithfullness" and "Saviour like a Shepard(sp?) Lead us" that sounded great when I was finished.

Thanx for the thoughts, and I hope your project meets with success.

Hi BC, Sounds like you have worked on some real "classic" Christian pieces. Do you ever get to play guitar for modern choruses, like "We Want to See Jesus Lifted High","Lord, Reign in Me",
"Firm Foundation"? I lead a 10 minute worship time at the end of our AWANA program and we use songs like the ones listed above and the kids love them. All the kids clap and sing and have a great time. We usually get twice the energy with 60 to 75 kids then we do from 400 people at out sunday worship services. I keep pushing to do more fast paced modern music on Sundays. We do newer Choruses but they are more of the "I See the Lord" variety, which is good in its own way.

Anyway, I think you are right about what you said. If anyone only litened to secular heavy metal and claimed christ I would really wonder. Once grounded in Christ and his word it is nice to know we have the freedom and discernment to enjoy certain entertainment without feeling guilty.

    In Christ,
    Brian

I haven't worked on too many choruses, but sing bass in the choir. I'm the only bass in a 15 voice choir.

I love hearing children sing. They are so enthusiastic, and easy to lead. Our adult congregation singing sometimes sounds like a death march.

Our music director holds a pretty tight grip. No bluegrass, and most new music is pretyy scrutinized. We use Ron Hamilton's choruses, and some newer music from The Wilds. I stay in submission, the music director holds the authority, I don't question it, even when I disagree with him. He has let me do some arrangements with an Appalachian feel, but is really picky about "showing off" . Like I said, I submit.

BC, You have a great attitude about submission. I fail in that area at times. I think I have an extra dilema in that our music coordinator is female. I once did a thread on whether the position of "music coodinator" can be held by a woman, based on biblical principles. Being under submission musically has and is a struggle for me. Anyway, I craked up at your death march analogy :D we have that same problem many sundays. Sometimes when I am leading a song I think is real up lifting and really touching my heart I put my hand up and look up to the Heavens, and then when I look out at the people it seems like I am the only one really enjoying the worship. :( I have learned to forget about others form of worship and just communicate with God myself. Very few people in my church raise their hands and only about a third at the most will clap the beat during a fast song. Well, I think we could all learn something from the enthusiasm of children.

    God's blessings on your day,
    Brian

Sherrie, I never said I was good at it. ;)

Seriously, thank you. I've had my ups and downs, and at one point thought about quitting all together, but I just can't give it up. The criticism gets to you after a while, and it's so tempting to just sit and stew about how "I'm not good enough."

I've been on a couple of auditions since I moved up here, but I've not been keeping up my lessons, and haven't found a choir to sing with. The discipline of that is wonderful. A coworker of mine and I may start practicing together soon. I've lost some of my range since going without regular practice, which is somewhat disappointing, but I'm confident I can get it back. Just need to stretch my voice a little. It's hard to do that in my apartment -- neighbors, you know. [IMG]

    Brian,

    You said...

"I really love a good electric guitar jam, no matter who is playing it. Not many good jams in Christian music."

Oh, man. You've brought up a real pet peeve of mine. My favorite type of music is bluegrass, but back in my pre-christian years my favorite, like Hendrix with Curtis, was the Allman Brothers Band. I still listen to their stuff sometimes, basically ignoring the lyrics of course, except maybe something like "blue sky", but mainly for the guitar work. The twin leads, the interplay, the improvised solos.

It frustrates the daylights to me that christian musicians, and groups, do so little jamming! I dont understand it. I hear "Third Day" referred to as "southern rock" and I just cringe! They dont jam! Lots of times the solos is not more than a few seconds, not even the lenght of a verse. They are one of my favorite chritian groups, I love their sound, but why dont they jam, or at least take a decent leghth solo???

Sometimes I wonder if they think that taking a full lenghth solo is a sin or something.

Big Tent Revival used to take solos, but they have broke up!

Thank goodness there is Phil Keaggy! My wife and I saw him in person for the 1st time about 2 years ago, and I havent gotten over it yet! Tons and tons of good ole, 60's/70's style, "psychedelic" solos!

    It was great!

    Mike
