    Good evening -

I hope you are enjoying the Book of Joshua. Our reading tonight concluded with the beginning of every kid's favorite Sunday School lesson, The Battle of Jericho, but for tonight I want to look at chapter 3.

Chapter 3 of the Book of Joshua marks the end of the 40 year journey of the nation of Israel in the desert. In this time, this nomadic nation had quested for the promise that God had made to Abraham centuries before, the Promised Land. The crossing of the Jordan River marks the entry. The parallels to the story of the Israelites crossing the Red Sea are obvious. It shows that Joshua is now truly the Mosaic leader of the Jews. The priest carrying the Ark of the Covenant stepped into the river and the water piled up upstream of them and the people entered their homeland. Tomorrow night, the bloodbath that was Jericho!

As you can see, Mark dives right into Christ's ministry. This is the "no frills" gospel with far fewer quotes and a much faster pace. We are at the point of the narrative of the life of Christ in Mark that we did not reach for four chapters in Matthew. Mark seems to want to get to the heart of the matter.

Our reading in First Corinthians emphasizes that God's Wisdom is above man's wisdom. Corinth was in Greece, a nation which prided itself on its philosophical knowledge and this may have discouraged some of the new believers because of the scoffing of their earthly neighbors. Do you think things have changed? Join us in "all other discussions" sometime!

    May God bless you

    - Clint
