I've always been a people pleaser, but I'm getting over it, :D, life is miserable when your a people pleaser, you work hard at pleasing people who can not be. And it isn't our responsability either.

Don't most people find "fat" jokes as repulsive as racial jokes??? Both are hurtful and meanspirited.

To me, the only exception to such things is ethnic jokes when clearly in good fun or by the ethnic person him/herself. For example, I love "redneck" humor by Jeff Foxworthy. I abhor "redneck" humor by New Yorkers. And vice-versa.

I think fat jokes are funny. I tell them often. Sometimes we just need to lighten up and laugh at ourselves. I like to tell people that I have donlopped disease. When they ask what it is, I say all my fat done lopped over my belt. :)

I messed up the poll too. Glad to see I'm not the only one.

I don't think fat jokes are ok at any time or under any condition.

People need to be edified, and not enough of that goes on.

You know? Every joke laughs at SOMEBODY.

Maybe we should not tell lawyer jokes.
    Maybe no more preacher jokes.

    No more blond jokes
    No more political jokes

Should we just stop all jokes that have people involved?

Sorry, brother, I have you beat...by quite a bit, I might add.

    350lbs?

In the lyrics as sung by Archie and Edith, "Those were the days!"

I love good fat jokes, and most other kinds of jokes.

I think the line gets crossed, or at least skewed, when the jokes are directed at someone specifically.

There is a difference between, "There was this really fat man who..." and "Bro. James Reed is so fat..."

There is also a difference between telling a joke that you know will be considered funny by us fat folks, and those that are specifically designed to hurt us.

That may be just me, but I don't care to be the butt of someone's insulting remarks, even if they are joking. Generic jokes are the best, be they fat, blonde, Aggie, whatever.

They are never appropriate and they're not funny to anyone who is overweight. If they say they are, that is their defense mechanism kicking in and you can bet it hurts them or they wouldn't be on the defense...

Bro. James....this is TERRIBLE....I'm definitely going to have to start telling skinny jokes about myself :tear:

Fatties are thin-skinned? Good some part of us is I guess.... But how does thin skin take the strain of holding the fat in  Sorry Sue, I don't buy it a bit....Maybe if you put more sugar or salt on it....

Wait....I just joked about my weight....OUCH! You are right....The pain is kicking in!! OW!! OWW!!! NOOOOoooooo....

heh heh I dunno if the pain defense thing is true for the rest, but can guarantee that sure isn't the case with this little....er....BIG black duck. Then again I have advantage of being from Oz where one of the biggest national hobbies is giving and getting. Add to that the bonus points I get from 13 years of night shift in the cab.

I think there's a big difference between humor and insults. I have spent most of my life being too short for my body weight. True humor is nothing more than a close look at reality. There's not a single catagory of person exempt. Those of us that suffer from undertallness can also be of a particular hair color, national origin, religious affiliation, vocation, etc..... Some folks attempt to be funny but what they really want to do is hurt you and diminish your sense of worth as a person. Let them. The world needs idiots like them so we can really appreciate the normal folks like us.

Take reality in stride. I work with the developmentally disabled. The other day one of the consumers rubbed my belly and asked if I was having a baby. She laughed so hard tears ran down her face. I laughed right along with her. She didn't set out to hurt me. I've been at 9 months for about 20 years now.

I could do something about my belly and multiple chins but I do not want to be responsible for a layoff at Little Debbie's. I know there are folks that have all sorts of medical reasons for weight gain. Use the "joke" as an opportunity to tell folks what's going on. Most folks will stick around long enough to listen and learn. Write off the one's that won't. They ain't worth the effort.

The vast majority of us got to be oversized by consuming more calories than we use. I just finished off a bag of Doritos while typing this. That's my fault. I didn't need them any more than I needed the ice cream sandwich I ate this afternoon. So should I hyper-ventilate everytime somebody says that me walking away looks like two rhinos fighting under a blanket? I don't think so.

I like this one, I have tried to lighted up, more ways then one ;) I must have don lopped disease as well, except Donelap over to the top of my thighs.

It stretches, I have the marks to prove it :tongue3:

I do not want to lay off the people in the food industry either LOL either and as for the looks that people give, maybe I am naïve but I do not see them, I hear them. Wait I take that back, At the Chinese buffet an older woman just gave me a look one time. I wanted to say that yes, there is still some up there for you HAHAHA

OK all of you might see me as changing my stance somewhat, maybe I am because you have helped me to put all of this into perspective and I thank you for that!!!

I do not find them as insulting as racist jokes, most people tell those type of jokes out of hate and fear. Fat jokes are yes, sometimes just jokes, as I read hear on the BB. I rather liked the trend of people trying to beat others in there weight gain LOL Nice change of pace

Are you kidding? I consider it a challenge to try to clear off the buffet.

Don't get me started on racist jokes. I consider them to be just like fat jokes. What's the intent? My wife is from Puerto Rico and my family heritage is Irish and our former business was formed under the name of "Spic and Mick". The only people I've ever met that were offended were neither. (Also, as long as blacks use the "n" word on each other, I don't think they should be offended when someone else does either, although I would never use it to simply describe a black person.)

I did say most people, I myself joke about my mothers family being Native American. Not that I would ever say them to someone who did not know that.

I only wish I got there looks, I look like the underside of a whale, tanning comes easily though - so then I look like a complete whale, stomack white and the rest dark

O wait, did I just make a fat joke  :tongue3:

As for the N word, I think that it comes from where they feel it is coming from, humor or hate

I have a good halibut belly going, but my tan is limited to my arms, neck, etc. It bugs my wife to no end that although 6/8ths of my family is Irish, 1/8th is German, and 1/8th is Cherokee that I'm darker than she is when she's been out of the sun for more than about 3 months. To her, she's hispanic, and should not have to worry about halibut belly. Put her in the sun for about 2 days, and she's dark, though.

I wore black trunks to the beach one time and spent the better part of an afternoon trying to convince two activists that I hadn't beached myself and I would be fine out of the water.

That would be The Shore for everyone from New Jersey.

    Are Jersey jokes ever appropriate?

Yeah. I got mad the first time people started pouring water on me to keep me wet until the tide came back in.

My dad has developed quite a belly, in his late years. His joke....

"My doctor told me to watch my weight, so I'm putting it right out there where I can see it....."

As someone who has put up with bald jokes for the last 15 years, I don't think fat jokes are all bad. There's a difference between being funny, and being mean.

I think you hit the nail on the head - funny or mean.

My problem isn't that I'm fat. I'm just about a foot too short!
