One man ask another man, are you a liar? O no said the second man I am not a liar! To which the first man replied, how many people do you have to kill to be a murderer? After a moment hesitation the first man again said, let me ask you again are you a liar? There is the scenario. How should the second man have answered?

Sounds like a trick question to me. I would think if you killed one person you would be a murderer but maybe I missed the emphasis of your question? Also, according to some on this board if you change your mind you are a lier so I guess that would make us all liars. I myself, do not believe that. Even God had a change do heart when He found grace in the eyes of Noah. I think to lie is to intentionally tell false because the truth you would have to pay something, like losing a friend, facing the law etc.

If the criteria is that telling one lie makes one a liar; I am a liar. I just want to hear from someone here who isn't!

Does over-eating (say on Thanksgiving Day) make one a glutton?

But, technically speaking, yes, If I have the capacity to lie and even if I do it only once, though I may not be an habitual liar, I am a liar.

Psalm 130:3 If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

If you've have told a lie in the past, that doesn't mean you're presently a liar. If you once were a womanizer, but have been faithfully married, you are not a womanizer. If you used to drink, but quit, you are not a drinker. If you used to smoker, but quit, you are not a smoker. Etc, etc.

It's a neat little exercise that they do on Way of the Master, but I'd say it's the wrong approach on this one.

    OK, that makes sense.

    What about "white" lies?

Like some of the answers to "How are you doing today"?

Yes, I try to be truthful, like:

"Terrible!" which generally is not an expected answer even if it is true.

Although "just great" is always true if you are saved.

    :)

All men are liars, one way or the other, one form or another.. There is only one who is Truth Himself.

If answering the question from my wife "Do you like my new dress?" means I'm a liar, then.....

Everyone lies...everyone sins. As Christians to we try to "sin-less". No one likes to admit these 'little' things but it is the truth nonetheless.

I would posit that lying in and of itself is not sin. "You're a beautiful young lady" to the ugliest girl in church, I think is quite acceptable. (The same hold true about your wife's dress, although that may just be self-preservation.)

We're not to habitually lie, we're also not to lie about the Truth, but David and Rahab both lied, and nowhere does the Bible say that it was wrong for them to do so. In fact, their actions were counted to them as righteous.

I think everyone lies to some extent

The more appropriate questions is Has anyone every broken the commandment of Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

I think you're combining some Scriptures there concerning David, Rahab and lying. Their sin was not counted as righteous. Their faith was counted as righteous.

But more seriously, if one lie is not a sin. Then one act of adultery is not really unfaithfulness. One murder is not really murdering.
Ephesians says we are to speak truth with our neighbor.

If you're talking about Ephesians 4:25, it's talking about a particular lie. (THE lie.) I don't think you can find any place in the Bible that says that it's always a sin to tell an untruth.

James 3:14 tells us to lie not against THE truth. Colossians 3:9 tells us not to make a habit of lying one to another.

Do you think it's a sin to tell some ugly girl that she's beautiful or to tell your wife that her new hairstyle is nice, even though it's atrocious, becuase you know she's self concious about it?

Well you could soften the truth ... "Honey I would love you even if you wore a potato sack" ...

Of course that would also have to be true :)

    Mima,

The correct answer the second man should have given is 'zero'.

One does not have to kill even one person to be labeled a murderer. Surprised?

1 John 3:15 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
