Actually this is a lost language for the most part. When i was growing up this word usage was very common. I put together in a book form about a year ago of all the words and their meanings of the hill talk so i wouldn't forget them. My grandfather used words like much abliged for thank you and recollect for remember. I know several words in Cherokee (Tsalagi) also.

I say it on purpose now. See what I mean? I'm being corrupted, corrupted I say!

I even called soda "pop" once. It just came flying out of my mouth.

And once in a while, just once in a while, mind you, I'll get a wee bit frustrated with someone and say "well bless her heart!"

    *sigh*

    It's a mad mad world.

The word "pop" is a yankee thing. In the south all carbonated drinks are referred to as "coke" as in "what kind of coke do you want?"

I never heard it referred to in California as pop. It was always soda.
I heard the word "pop" in Ohio and in Oklahoma and figured it was something that originated more towards the south. My version of south is about halfway split down the center of the map. LOL California is the beginning. Cut the map in half at the end border of Montana and down the end border of Arizona and look. Anything to your left is heading closer to home. Hit the ocean and you're home. LOL Anything to the right is south. Hit the ocean on the OTHER side and you've got good lobster, but you're the opposite of home.
Never really analyzed soda vs pop, now I'll have to go look it up.

I rise up and declare a blessing over you. You KNOW. You're one of the few. I won't ask where. Why. How. I'll just accept it for the joy that it is.

But I'll be showing this thread to the girls later. I can't promise they won't hunt you down, feed you a pastrami on rye with really good mustard, and then run away laughing, because they really enjoy it when we run across "another one" (even online) ever since we moved to this foreign land where we are strangers among an even stranger people.
