It depends on who you are ............
Those people who earned Obama's favor and were rewarded from his taxpayer funded "stash", the $800+billion stimulus fund, are better off. No one else!
Average annual income down about 10%!
National debt increased by 50%!
Number on food stamps increased by ~15 million!
23 million unemployed or under employed!
Food prices up ~15%!
Price of gasoline more than doubled!
Only a devout leftist could believe things were better!
16 TRILLION does not care who you are.
Brian Terry's parents aren't better off - they lost their son at the hands of this corrupt administration.
Ask the millions of babies who have been killed at the hands of the abortionist during the past 3-1/2 years if they are better off. Oh, wait, you can't, they're dead.
Ask the common stock holders of GM if they are better off - they got zip.
Entire cities are not better off - some have gone bankrupt during the obama reign.
Homeowners are not better off - those of us who have managed to keep our homes - our property values are worth about 30% to 40% less now - due to neighborhood foreclosures which skew the comps unfavorably for selling or refinance.
Small business owners are certainly not better off - they are having trouble getting bank loans to meet payroll.
Ask somebody who lost their job under obama's watch, has run out of unemployment benefits, and has given up looking for a job because there are no jobs available that would support a family - they sure aren't better off.
However, I can tell you without even looking at your link who is better off:
The campaign bundlers for Obama - they are better off.
Solyndra executives are certainly better off - because obama gave them $535 million of our tax dollars:
From the Hill:
Oh, ask Gibson Guitar if they are better off after having been raided by Obama's thugs.
Or, ask some of the states if they are better off after having to spend thousands if not millions of dollars to defend their rights under obama's DOJ thugs.
As far as America - is America better off after having our credit rating downgraded under obama's watch for the first time in the history of our nation?
Are we, our children, our grandchildren, and our great grandchildren better off buried under $16 TRILLION dollars in debt?
Is the planet healed? Have the oceans receded?
The only people who are better off are the Obamas and their rich friends and supporters.
Oh, I almost forget General Electric - no taxes for them - they are better off. (GE Filed 57,000-Page Tax Return, Paid No Taxes on $14 Billion in Profits - per Weekly Standard)
Even Obama's half brother isn't better off over in Kenya, still living in a place with dirt floors. His mother-in-law is doing swell, though, living in the White House on our dime.
Hey, CTB, thanks for asking!
The question posed is selfish. The question should be is our nation better off. Material parameters are not the only measurement. Are we better off spiritually, morally, and morale wise? Has self pride increased? Has an independent spirit increased? Has charity towards others increased? The answers are obvious and do not even merit a response. It remains to be seen if a Romney victory will counter the trend. It is 100% sure an Obama victory will not.
No the country is not better off.
No, me and my family are not better off.
My bride has worked in the same office, doing the same job, for 11 years. She worked for various private companies on a government contract at the Air Force base here. Obama, with the support of our Dem senators, took over those jobs. They made them all civil servants. They reclassified the jobs and everyone took a pay cut of several thousand dollars. They also cut the staff by several positions. Then Obama, and our 2 Dem senators, hailed it as a job creating event. Then they enacted a hiring freeze, despite having people quit and move to private, and better paying, jobs. So they have fewer people doing more work for less pay. They are now also reclassifying the vacant positions, now that the hiring freeze has lifted, to "create" a job in another office.
Anyone want to guess how many millions of tax dollars it cost to "fix" something that wasn't broke? I honestly don't know, but I am confident its an absurd amount.
I am really surprised that Montana has Demcratic Senators. I always thought of it as a Republican state, especially in Presidential elections. Our Democrats tend to be state and local officials and fairly conservative. We have two Republican Senators, and five of our six Represenatives are Republican.
For my family things went downhill beginning in 2007 (financially). Ironically, that is when the dem's took over congress. Coincidence? Nope.
I'm personaly not better off economically, but we are OK. Obama has froze pay raises for the last 2 years. However I feel that Planned Parenthood is much better off, and gays are much better off, those who abuse the entitlement systems are better off, or should I say, are more numerous. I could go on but you get the point.
4 years ago I was out of work and going back to school to change careers for medical reasons (bad knees). We were scraping by on 1 paycheck and a small VA disability. The VA was paying my way through school (tax money) but only allowed me 2 years. I had no insurance so my medical care was at the VA hospital (That needs to be a completely separate tirade :BangHead. It was a struggle but we saw God’s hand at work in our lives.
Today I am employed full time, but I live in a nation that is 16 trillion dollars in debt. We are going more than 1 billion dollars deeper in debt each day. We have a “president” who has no problem ridiculing Americans for “clinging to their guns and their religion” but apologizes to his chosen people after they attack our embassy and kill our citizens. We are borrowing money from a nation that doesn’t have our best interest at heart, and giving it to people that hate us and to people who refuse to work. No nation can long endure such poor management.
If I look with a selfish short-sighted eye, I can say that I am better off, but many around me are still struggling. We are a nation are in real trouble and no one seems to have a plan to turn us around. :tear:
Very well said!
Just another Crabby drive by thread?
I'm better off than I was 4 years ago. (I think) All 5 of my kids are better off than they were 4 years ago. At least no one is in worse shape.
No one who cherishes freedom is better off than they 4 years ago. Of course a lot of folks are willing to sell themselves into serfdom if only someone will take care of them! And then some democrats are in need of someone, anyone, whom they can make into a god figure.
Yes, well a financial inheritance will do that for a person though won't it?
How much better off would you have been without that generosity of your relative that left it to you?
Not so much I suspect.
I would be doing fine on by union negotiated Washington State Supreme Court upheld state and city pensions which pay all the monthly bills.
The question is not whether you are "doing fine".
The question is "Are you better off now than four years ago?" - Your inheritance aside.
A lot of this nonsense started from the myth of Hoover causing the Great Depression, and Roosevelt bringing us out of it. The Great Depression was caused by reasons that formed before Hoover ever was elected. Market forces after WW1 rapidly expanded the economy and markets during the 20s. Government gets too much credit and blame for the economy. Government policy has limited effect. There is not much Hoover could have done to stop the Depression, or work out of it before his term ended.
If everyone will recall, since we always add freedom and liberty to the discussion, the President that acted like a dictator taking away freedoms promised by the Bill of Rights was President Wilson, passing laws that sent people to jail for criticizing his handling of the war. He was so obcessed with his power and foreign policy, the economy was neglected, and planted the seeds that lead to the Great Depression. The election of 1920 returned the Republicans to power. President Harding's administration was riddled with scandal. He died before his term was over, leaving Coolidge in charge. The economic cycle and lack of leadership of the economy during the Wilson, Harding and Coolidge years made it impossible for Hoover to do much anything about the situation.
After Roosevelt was elected, many laws were passed creating jobs for public infrastructure. However, unemployment remained high until WW2. The war returned the nation to prosperity, not the Roosevelt government programs. The whole idea that Republicans are for the wealthy and Democras are for the working man is baloney and built on a myth.
If Democrats are so concerned about the common man, then how come house interest rates hovered at 15% variable when Carter was President? If government programs work so well to redistribute wealth and bring peace and harmony, then why did the worst race riots in our history take place during the administration of Lyndon Johnson, who created many such programs. If Democrats are so good at bringing prosperity to the common man, then why did the American electorate return the House to Republican control in 1994, only two years after Clinton was elected? How does raising the national debt five trillion dollars during the Obama administration help the average American?
The only Democrat President who even attempted to use common economic sense during his term of office was President Kennedy, by lowering the tax rate.
Why is it that every war this century except the Iraqi war has started under a Democrat, WW1, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam? Oh yeah, Democrats are really for the common man. With friends like that, who needs enemies?
>The question is "Are you better off now than four years ago?" - Your inheritance aside.
Yes. By law, every year I get a raise by cost of living or by contract escalator clause, whichever is higher.
>No one who cherishes freedom is better off than they 4 years ago.
Everything I was legally permitted to do 4 years ago I am still permitted to do, limited only by my physical condition.
