I guess I failed miserably to get the type of data and comments that I needed for my book (in a different post on sin).

So, I'll start over... I'll go sin by sin, to get your comments and most importantly, the numbers from a poll. Your answers are needed, and your participation in the poll is essential if I'm going to get the kind of data I need to draw conclusions from for my book.

Again, if you comment, please let me know if it's OK to use your comment. Your name will not be used in any way.

    THANKS!!!

    Shalom,

    Pastor Paul :type:

I assume that "at not time" means "at no time". Gossiping is sin--simple as that. There is a difference between asking for prayer for someone and talking about what they're doing. Baptist churches I've been in have "unnamed prayer request", or something like that; I can't remember the exact term. We don't have to name someone's sin, because God knows all things and all hearts and minds. We don't even have to name the person since God knows all things and knows who we mean.

l know some Baptist who would never publicly endorse gossiping, but privately practice it regularly.

For instance, let me tell you about this woman in our church, who knows all the skeletons and reveals them regularly. I've heard she has some skeletons of their own. I've heard that she's a closet drinker, and her house looks like a pig sty. I'd tell you her name if I was a gossiper, and you were a member if my church. After all, our members have a right to know, don't they.

Besides, I make it a firm practice never to talk about my fellow church members to outsiders.

As someone said one time, "I never say anything about someone unless it's something good. And boy oh boy, is this good!"

Gossip is one of the most destructive and ignored sins in the churches of America today. It should be treated the same as our two favorite sins to harp on, sexual sin and drunkedness. There is no excuse for it. It ruins lives, destroys reputations, and has become a form of warped entertainment. Beware when you see someone anxious to hear the latest news, especially when they pretend to want to know because they are concerned or want to pray for them.

Within any given local church, it needs to be dealt with immediately and without any winks and nods.

We all need to pray for Tom, because he gossips.

Guess who's the deacon chairman in my church? Yep, I'm the one. The information I had to share was so good that I called myself.

Seriously, folks, saturneptune is right about gossip.

Little good can come of it.

Gossip is cut from the same cloth as hatred and death. It seeks to cut down others to puff up the gossiper. Our words indicate our heart. We cannot gossip and tear down others if we truly love them and want God's best for them. Over the years, I've heard countless sermons on fornication, adultery, stealing, gluttony, etc, but very few sermons on gossip. It's easy to condemn people for sins we don't commit, like abortion, but hard to talk about our little pet sins like gossip and envy.
