I read a very interesting article this morning about the St. Benedict Center in NH. It is a pre-Vatican II church community where the women still wear head scarfs (or veils, I'm not sure what they are properly called) to Mass. They say this church was founded by followers of a Rev. Feeney, who was supposedly a very outspoken advocate of the Pre-Vatican II doctrines. They also say that Mel Gibson's church is very similar to this one.

I have a question to all the Catholic folk out there: are these folks part of the RCC or not? This article is unclear. It says that they do not answer to the diocese. They quote a representative of the diocese saying that these people are not in union with the church. I wondered because I've never run into a group like this before. Thanks!

Feeneyites (as they are called) are not in communion with the Catholic Church, they have separated and now do their own thing.

Mel Gibson's father is a Sede Vacantist, also not in communion with the Catholic Church, they do their own thing.

Mel has never publically said he has broken with the Church, he identifies himself in public as a Roman Catholic, however there are questions as to if this is true or not.

Just think of them as another branch of protestantism.

The Feeneyites are located at St. Benedict's Center in Harvard, MA. an affluent town approx. 10 miles north of me in Clinton. They are not in communion with the Catholic Church, neither are they another branch of protestantism.

It should be noted that Fr. Feeney himself was reconciled with the Church before his death.

I think the proper word would be "schismatic" which carries a bit of a different connotation.

The article does mention this. Unusually, it seemed to be a very factual article with little bias one way or the other. I could be mistaken, though. Not being Catholic, I might have missed some subltlety in the writing.

This is a very interesting thread. The head scarf worn by the females in pre-Vatican 2 days in Oz was called a mantilla, usually white or off white lace.

As a lapsed Catholic I have been reading up on the Tridentine Mass adherents in Oz who are a part of the Levebre (spelling?) Pope Pius x adherents which is basically adherents of the mass before Vatican 2 in the mid 1960s. There was a bitter debate which seems to have settled to an extent and they were not excommunicated although there was a period where it appeared to be the probable outcome. This is an important item of discovery for me personally. I do not know about the USA divisions and how they stand but would be interested in finding out more about that.
