By the same token, you're talking about a country where, for decades, nothing except poverty, opression, and death have been assured. If Iraqis are to hoist themselves by their own petards, they must first own petards, don't you think?

Um, pizza, do you know what a "petard" is? Or what the expression means?

Ahem... I didn't so I looked it up and was still confused then looked at the several applications.

    pe·tard [ pe taard ] (plural pe·tards)

    noun

    1. arms explosive charge for breaching fortification: a small explosive charge or grenade used to blow a hole in a door, wall, or fortification

    2. firecracker: a powerful firecracker

[Mid-16th century. Via French from, ultimately, Latin pedere “to break wind.” Ultimately from an Indo-European word that is also the ancestor of English fizzle and feisty.]

be hoist with your own petard to be the victim of your own attempt to harm somebody else.

The piece is interesting. It probably represents what Bush and the neocons wish the US Constitution said. It certainly reflects how they govern in violation of it.

But Iraq has gazillions of dollars in oil and can probably be the best Socialist nation of all time.
