How Does Slavery Benefit White People Today?

The legacy of slavery has benefited every white person in this country–directly and personally. In a very gross analogy, if you run a series of foot races over 300 years but prevent 13 percent of the participants from learning how to run for 180 years and then give them concrete sneakers for another 80 years–but allow them full access for 40 years, it will take the 13 percent quite a few races to be competitive because the other 87 percent advanced their skills by practice and repetition.

Life is not a foot race, but it is a fact that the average white person would not economically benefit from switching places with an average black person (black households average one-tenth the household wealth of white households). If you believe all people are created equal, there has to be a reason for this–and there is: racism.

The first slaves were brought to this country in the 1600s. After slavery ended in 1865 (the Emancipation Proclamation did not free slaves in the North) and until the 1960s, African Americans lived under laws that overtly discriminated against them. In 1960, most African Americans could not vote and had practically no access to higher education. Although the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts (1964 and 1965, respectively) addressed the legal issues, and legislation like the CRA opened banking to red-lined areas, programs to eliminate disparities have proved to not be adequate.

Before somebody e-mails me with the old canard of “Nobody in my family ever owned a slave,” I’d like to retire that excuse with a personal example: Generations ago, my ancestors fled the horrible conditions in their home countries to establish families in the United States. It was never much of a question as to whether or not we could pick wherever we wanted to live, have access to college or get a mortgage. If my family suffered under generations of knowing that those doors were closed, it would take generations more to overcome that lack of family know-how. In essence, my family zipped right past people whose families were here long before mine. I never even questioned that Rutgers would be open to accepting my application, that the Navy would send me to flight school or that McGraw-Hill or Time Warner would hire me–and that when I was there I would be in the vast majority (there were less than 3 percent people of color in both publications I worked for). I never doubted my ability to start a company and had plenty of friends to mentor me along the way.

If you go back to people being created equally, it is just math that a percentage of our country’s greatest minds were eliminated from the competition simply by fact of skin color, and by extension their families were denied the head-start of their accomplishments. Every white person benefits from this–even people who arrived to the United States yesterday.

Unfortunately, this has hurt our country dramatically. If you caught black households up to white household wealth, it would be the equivalent of injecting the entire GDP of Japan into our economy. Who would benefit? Mostly white people, as the majority would manufacture the goods and services purchased with the “new” wealth.

The point being that time and time again, contrary to what a large part of the populace wants to believe, Whites receive certain privileges even to this day that have resulted from slavery.

Those privileges extend through employment, education, law enforcement, politics and every aspect of our society in which skin color affords white people certain privileges over their black and brown-skinned counterparts.

    Here's a fact...
I am a Federal Government Emplyee....

    I am a White Heterosexual Anglo-Saxon Protestant....

I make jokes with, kid with, and laugh about the extent to which I have "nothing coming" with respect to my possibilities of promotion with my fellow co-workers....

I have Hispanic, female, black, hetero-sexual and homo-sexual colleagues in abundance....

EVERY time I speak with them (as a heterosexual white male Anglo-Saxon Protestant) I joke with them about how I've got "NOTHING COMING".

    My boss...

A (highly-qualified,intelligent quality black conservative Republican man) jokes all day with me about how I don't have a darn thing coming to me as respecting promotion potential...

Ditto the homosexuals, ditto the Asians....

    It's a running joke where I work.

You have no clue what you are talking about.

Where I work, the only people who have anything working against them are Hetero-sexual WASPS....
And it's a running joke with us. They know it, I know it, my Black boss, who kids with me about it knows it.

    (He's former U.S. Army)....
and he knows how pathetic it's become...

And he jokes with me when I ask for something that given my state I have nothing coming to me...

You are preposterously detached from reality.

Also, the truth is that too many times white Americans get demonized, as somehow we of the current times were still the same group that was involved in slavery, and how is it that we also rarely hear that MOST here up north were strongly against that trade, and that it was republicans who have been the primary ones to support the full rights for Black americans,, while Democrats pretty much have always been against that?

And are we suppossed to be giving money back to all black american families now?

And wonder why it was that Dr King saw it far better light than most in the "movement" seem to today, as he advocated strong famalies, personal responsibility, and a willingness to work hard and to ctreate and make something of yourselves?

Too many today seem to be content to just keep on letting bog governemnt pay their way!

Think that there has been an overreaction towards whilte americans, as the current mindset in our government from the top down seems to be to punish us for the sins of the past, and to make others such as Homosexual and minorites as special/privedged cases!

So Zaac, if you really believed this, you'd divest yourself of what you have received as a result of white privilege. Start paying more than what the bank says you have to pay in interest because blacks generally have to pay higher interest rates in the city. Give back whatever college and post-grad degrees and refuse to tell any job interview that you have them, because blacks don't have the same chance at a college you have had.

The truth is a lot of what the OP wrote is true. The question is do you feel your grandparents and great grandparents guilt so strongly that you will bankrupt yourself and give it to someone in Harlem?

But I can't and won't feel guilty about wrongs I did not commit. I have enough wrong doing in my life that I regret.

Now coming back to reality. What does what you just told us have to do with Whites benefiting today from slavery?

What country do you live in Zaac?
Why not travel a bit and see if your same "privileges" apply?
I would start with Saudi Arabia first, where Bible Studies are not allowed but condemned.
In Pakistan the Blasphemy Law (using the name of Mohammed in any insulting way--even without a witness) is often a weapon used to settle a score, a grudge, to get vengeance, etc., since no witnesses are required.
Also, white people are targets of both Al Qaeda and Taliban extremists.

Iraq is also a lovely place to live these days.

So is Syria. Did you know that an epidemic of the flesh eating disease has broken out among the ISIS leaders there in northern Syria. Good place for you to visit, no?

Would you still be complaining about the "privileges" of others then?

You mean the way that Blacks are demonized as being so much more violent than everybody else? Or maybe you mean like the way darren Wilson described Mike Brown as looking like a demon? Or maybe you meant the way the officer in Ferguson described the crowd as "f*****g animals?

There's no mention of a political party in the title of this thread.

Did you read anything that I've written that asked you for money? Stop with this irrational fear that somebody wants you to give them something other than mutual respect.

Pure foolishness. Before Dr. King was murdered, he was talking about the two Americas and the economic inequality between Black and white in this country.

He had enough sense to recognize that those latter things of which you spoke could be and were being hindered for the same reasons that men were enslaved.

Thread has nothing to do with big government paying the way.

    The USA
I can just about guarantee to you that I've traveled and seen more of the world than the majority of the people on this board.

And I'm speaking to the privileges afforded in the US as the result of slavery.

Been to Saudi Arabia several times. They didn't enslave Black people in the United States.

I've been to Pakistan. Nice people. But they didn't enslave Black people in the United States either.

Been to Iraq several times. They want something different from the death and destruction of Islam. But they didn't enslave Black people in the United States either.

Toughy. I'm still trying to get into Syria. Hopefully God will open the door. But ISIS didn't enslave Black people in the United States either.

    Yes.

One of the lessons I taught my daughter upon graduating nursing school was that prejudice is real and she would have to deal with it.

Some people would take advantage of her
    Some would say nasty things
They would try and push her buttons to see her reaction

There would be a double standard
...she couldn't make the mistakes that others would be allowed to make
...the trouble that others made might be overlooked but she might get fired
...rules would be bent for others but not for her
...she would not get the benefit of the doubt

Names that other people used for themselves could not be repeated or used by her

It's a bit tougher being a Caucasian in a city hospital.

    That is in the past.
What about the slavery and the persecution that blacks today hold people in:
    http://www.worthynews.com/18505-niger-muslims-burn-69-churches-christians-forgive

    http://www.worthynews.com/18345-nigeria-muslims-herdsmen-attack-christian-village

The black people (Muslims in Africa), many of them extremists often hold Christians, women, children as slaves. That is in the present not in the past.

So Zaac you want me to tell my middle grandchild who is Caucasian and African American that he has the privilege from slavery, which should he be told? The Caucasian privilege or the African American privilege of affirmative action or similar laws! He resembles the African American side.

If he resembles the black side, get the whomevers from which his black side derives to sit him down and let him know how things truly operate for someone with his skin color.

Because like it or not, your grandchildren who do not share his skin color will be afforded certain privileges he will not just based on the color of his skin.
