    The scholars immediately disagreed over the causes of the war and disagreement persists today.​

    Most people are taught that the war was fought solely over slavery. Though that was part of the reason - there were several factors.
    Lincoln even said he would be willing to end the war, even if it meant that slavery as to continue.

    Once again the fiction that the Civil War was not fought over slavery, with those wanting the institution to continue withdrawing from the union.

    Now we say the argument over abortion is about women's reproductive rights. Then they said, besides slavery and the threat Lincoln presented to slavery, it was really about states rights and economic freedom. Right. :)
