Cops are the terrorists in our neighborhood: On Freddie Gray, another victim of police brutality

    ...
America is in a state of emergency. I’m not sure why I don’t see the president setting our terrorist level at bright orange, because the story of a cop killing an innocent black person surfaces every week. It’s important that we use the term “innocent” when describing these victims because in America, you are innocent until proven guilty and these slain African-Americans aren’t getting their day in court. There’s so may cop killings in the news right now that I’d be surprised if any black person stopped on command* — black bodies are piling up, and I can’t even keep up with the names anymore.

Lately I’ve been having that cop talk a couple times a week with my nieces, nephews, or with young people at high schools and middle schools. The convo goes the same way every time. I start out by saying, “Your lives matter. I swear to god they do!” I have to reiterate this as much as possible, because society is telling a different story.

Then I tell them I know every time they check the news or log on to Twitter or Instagram or Facebook or WorldStar, they are seeing people that look just like them being gunned down as if they aren’t human by police officers — and many times, those officers get away, but despite that, you do matter. The fact that similar videos surface of white officers like Jesse Kidder of Ohio trying their best to not shoot dangerous white men weakens my claim.

But still I tell them that they matter, even though our legal system is obviously lopsided. I tell them they are human and the problem is that many of these officers don’t understand that. They are part of a long history of Americans who don’t see value in African and African-American life, leading all the way back to the days of slavery when it was legal to treat blacks as subhuman. Back when our own American legal system identified black people as being three-fifths of a human.

I tell them most of these officers who are committing these murders are scared, racist and ignorant, so it’s up to you to understand, because those cops will never understand or care about you. I tell them to master their perspectives and understand what cops are thinking when they see you — because your life could depend on it. The consequence of not understanding police officers is death.

The author should have a talk with nieces, nephews, and with young people at high schools and middle schools to stop being thugs and then they won't get in situations where they are shot for being an idiot.

Granted….it is obvious from his conclusions (and psychic insight into the police officer’s motives) that the author of the article is racist. This is undeniable. But the article does bring up a few good points (not that they were not out there before). Black men are just as racist as white officers. White officers may jump to conclusions (e.g., a young black man points a toy gun, they may assume it is real and kill the young man) based on the situation….to include race. Black men (obviously the author of the article) assume that white officers are racist because they kill young black men who only have toy guns….and this assumption includes race. What is amazing, however, is that it is a vocal black population that comes out as overtly racist, not the white officers that were involved in the events in question. Perhaps it is because their racism is out front (it is not an assumption, but verifiable). I don’t know. But the article only serves to illustrate that issues exist on both sides of the debate.

There are issues and prejudices in the world. Some of these are based on race, although few based on race alone. But articles like this are nothing but the….well…the pot calling the kettle black.

It is perfectly acceptable to fire your weapon in defense if someone points a toy weapon that looks very much like a real gun.

Of course it is. Unless that someone has a skin tone darker then yours. Then it is racism. Haven't you been keeping up with things, Rev?

No it doesn't. It serves only to show that extremists are using tragic situations for political causes and political causes along. No other reason exists but to create drama, gain sympathy for political advantage.

The Rev whathisface said it should be illegal for white people to kill black people even if it is in self defense.

If parents let a child have a realistic toy gun, they better make sure the orange tip is in place. They could end up being responsible for the death of their child.

That orange tip at the end of the barrel makes all the difference.

The issue is when we access some situations race is involved. Statically the assessment may be right, but the one time it proves wrong it is deemed racially motivated. If a black man wearing a tank top and blue bandana approaches my window as I’m stopped at a red light, I am apprehensive. Because of his appearance (to include his race) I do not automatically deduce that he is merely trying to alert me that my car is leaking fluid. If a white man in kaki’s and a polo approaches me at a red light, I may not automatically realize that he is there to car jack me. The moral is that white people, if they dress well, would make excellent car-jackers…which is a racist statement that I believe would prove statically correct under hypothetical statics (if there is such a thing).

    I agree.

Absolutely correct. Do away with 'em all.

But ... what do we do about enforcing laws? What do we replace them with?

That's just it, they do not want them enforced except when it is against them.
