......according to a story on 60 Minutes last week. I watched this story on 60 minutes last Sunday but didnt get a chance to post it here, anyone else see this? Here is an excerpt from their web site.

One of those alleged facts is featured prominently at the beginning of "The Da Vinci Code." On a page headed "Fact," Dan Brown says that the Priory of Sion, which is central to the secret at the heart of his book, is a real organization. He says that at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris — the French National Library — you can find proof that it was founded in Jerusalem at the time of the Crusades. That proof is in some documents known as the Dossiers Secrets or Secret Files.

So 60 Minutes decided to check out those Secret Files. The Bibliothèque Nationale made exact copies for the 60 Minutes team to look at because they said the originals were too fragile to handle.

We soon found what we were looking for. One document gives the history of the Priory of Sion dating back to the 12th Century, and there's a list of Grand Masters that includes such illustrious names as Sir Isaac Newton and Leonardo Da Vinci. This information would be astounding — except for one thing.

"I do know what was going on in Jerusalem in the 12th Century, I do know. I spent 40 years working on it and what these people say — did not happen," says Jonathan Riley-Smith, the former professor of ecclesiastical history at Cambridge University and a leading authority on the Crusades.

French researchers have also questioned the authenticity of these secret files ever since they were deposited in the Bibliotheque Nationale in the 1960's. Their attention came to focus on a man named Pierre Plantard, who claimed to be the current Grand Master of the Priory of Sion. But evidence at the police headquarters in Paris tells a different story. Historian Claude Charlot, who is director of police archives, says there’s a file on Plantard, who died in 2000, showing that during World War II he was investigated by the secret services. So what was their conclusion?

"The investigation said, 'He is a young man whose mind — as we say in French — is cloudy. He is a fantasist; he is not a serious person,'" Charlot said, with the help of a translator.

One of Plantard's fantasies was to set up right-wing, anti-Semitic organizations, similar in style to medieval orders of chivalry. But in reality these organizations existed only on paper.

"I noticed that in one of the police reports it was noted that his organization 'French National Renewal' was described as a ‘phantom group.' That he claimed it had 3,000 members and the police found it had only four," Bradley remarked.

Charlot says it was a pure invention.

I recently read the book. It was a good read and I couldnt put it down. Fortunatly, I was able to buy the paperback at Wal-Mart for $4.97.
Dans Brown's book is totally based on what he says is a secret organization that is guarding this secret of the Holy Grail, the Prioy of Sion. It is all made up. But of course millions will watch this movie and accept it all as fact because a sensational lie is more fun than the truth.

I did see this. Over a dozen books have been written pointing out this fraud about the Priory of Scion and many other errors in his book.

Here's the catch: the front page of Brown's book says that all descriptions of "artwork, architecture, documents and secret rituals" are accurate. The book presents what are allegedly true events of history in a fictional setting.

I still don't understand how Christians like a book that attacks the Bible, attacks and denies the deity of Christ, states that sexual rituals took place as part of legitimate Judaism, and exalts goddess worship.

Anyone notice that the Word of God is free of charge? Literary sideshows take in more million$ than the sideshows at the circus. Those who write exposes' are doing pretty good too. Could I interest you in some prayer cloths and holy water?--for a nominal fee of course.

The wages of sin is death; the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ, The Lord.

    Selah,

This just goes to show how Hollywood has an affect on people. Many people will die and go to hell because they believe a fictional book / movie is fact.

It amazes me that there are still people going to the forest where the "Blair Witch" movie was filmed, thinking it was a true story.

You know what... it's fiction. It's meant to be entertaining and nothing more. Don't attack the author of a fiction novel when it's the readers who can't seperate fact from fantasy.

It's not a matter of attacking the author. You did't read what I wrote above -- yes, it's supposedly fiction but Dan Brown wrote on the fist page that all descriptions of art, architecture, secret documents, and rituals are true. This is a lie. When someone lies like that, and when they attack the deity of Christ and the Bible, we are supposed to defend the faith and try to keep people from being misled.

The story is fiction but contains gnostic attacks on the faith from the early centuries that are being revived. These gnostic beliefs are not fiction. One of the characters is a historian, so what he says sounds like it's history. He repeats a lot of the gnostic stuff as well as new "myths" about the deity of Christ and other stuff that people believe. So this part is NOT fiction.

    Katie,
    I just can't agree.
Fiction or not, anything that talks falsely about the Lord, specifically about Who He is and what He did, is not entertaining.

when I first saw him months ago on good morning america he talked as if it was all based on truth, and he fully believe it. He obviously did not mean the facts he thinks he has to be fiction.

From the commercial for the movie, it looks good and interesting. With one of Hollywoods best actors, Tom Hanks in a starring role, you know tons of people will see it. I'm sure we will once it comes to DVD but we know enough not to be decieved by it too.

It is historical fiction concocted in the mind of one who at the moment is unregenerate.

For example, the Priory of Sion is documented to have existed (read Psalm104_33's post on the 60 minute investigation), and there [b ]are[/b] documents that show it was founded in the 12th century (now if that was when the crusades happened, you know. I don't.)

From that, Dan Brown proceeded to construct lies and fiction and used untruth in the promotion of his book and the Christ-hating media jumped in.

There is value for some people to see it to speak against it. But please rethink if you are just going to watch it for entertainment.
The book on which this is based portrays Jesus as not God, the resurrection as false, that He married Mary Magdalene who then had a child, that physical descendants exist now through French lines, that most if not all of the start of the Church was a hoax, perpetuated through history.
    That's just part.

This is not entertainment. This is an attack on the faith.

But here is my main point: even if everybody agreed and knows it is fiction, I do not believe Christians should watch such a portrayal of the Lord for entertainment.

Yes, I know what it's about. One major reason I wanted to watch it is because I talk to people around me alot about Christianity and faith. I wanted to read the book but didn't get around to getting it. Still might.
I'm sure this movie will be a hit.

It's just another attack on the Jesus of the bible and our faith in general. Satan is grasping at straws these last days. He is pretty good at deceiving those not seeking the truth.

We need to stick with the bible and count the rest as garbage!

It is both a problem and a blessing. Like "The Passion of the Christ" it provides us with an opportunity to highlight and distinguish the truth of scripture and the errors of these legends.

I first read about the Knights Templar, Hapsburgs, et al 10-12 years ago. This stuff isn't new. Brown just found a real creative way of popularizing it.

I think Stroebel the Bible Answer Man quoted Dan Brown as saying that he started out as a skeptic but that his research had actually convinced him that the core ideas were true. He probably isn't as benign as some here seem to think... but God could use the evils of Pharoah and Pilate... he can use Dan Brown's non-sense as well.

The Fact is that some of us (I said most of us) are firmly rooted enough in our faith to not let this book and movie to convince us otherwise. But there are millions and millions of people around the world who will watch this movie and allow their feeble minds to be easily convinced that the Bible is a lie concocted by the Roman Catholic Church while at the same time suppressing the real truth.
I have already found opportunities to tell others the truth when evesdropping on conversations in the supermarket checkout line.

If anyone is that desperate to be entertained for two to three hours, there are reruns of Mr Ed and the Gong Show on all day long. Those shows would do more for your intellect than this movie.

I think Dr James White sums it up good when he says:

One thing is for certain: just as the book is designed to inculcate doubt about the veracity of the Bible and the entire Christian faith, the film moves that idea out of the printed page and presents it with compelling images on the screen. And given that our culture is made up primarily now of those who are visually oriented, used to "sound-bites" instead of lengthy periods of concentrated thought, and who are trained to disbelieve and think in the most muddied fashion, The Da Vinci Code will once again highlight the reality that the evangelistic task today must be apologetic from the start. We are seeking not only to proclaim the facts of the gospel anymore. No, now we must deal with the very existence of truth itself! Those who refuse to see that this is part and parcel of what it means to proclaim the good news in Western culture today are simply ignoring the reality all around them.
