    I got this list for the 2005 Death Penalty figures (Amnesty). I was surprised to see China is at the top. I would like to know exactly what offences get the Death Penalty in China, and if it is used to persecute the church?

    Executions in 2005
    * China: 1,770+
    * Iran: 94+
    * Saudi Arabia: 86+
    * USA: 60
    * Pakistan: 31
    * Yemen: 24
    * Vietnam: 21
    * Jordan: 11
    * Mongolia: 8
    * Singapore: 8
    * Kuwait: 7
    * Libya: 6
    * Palestinian Authority: 5
    * Taiwan: 3
    * Iraq: 3
    * Bangladesh: 3
    * Uzbekistan: 2+
    * Indonesia: 2+
    * North Korea: 1+
    * Somalia: 1+
    * Belarus: 1
    * Japan: 1

    Note: “+” symbol indicates that the figure is a minimum one; the true figure may be higher but information was limited

    I did some searching and found that China uses the death penalty for 70 different crimes, many of which are nonviolent. China along with several other countries will execute minors.
    I do believe there are instances where the death penalty is right, such as the recent news story posted in the news forum about the murder of the little girl.

    This site has some interesting facts.

    How does China defing "minor", just out of curiosity?

    The death penalty is 100% effective.

    I think with the overcrowding they have, they really don't care if they "trim the herd", so they will use non violent, or minor crimes as an excuse to do so.

    I'm surprised to see US is only 4th. From the way Europe and others talk about us, you'd think we were executing thousands per year. You never hear them complain about China, Iran, or Vietnam! :rolleyes:

    In fact, people are idolizing some things about China now, like yin-yang beliefs and things along those lines. I'm glad to get this info - I can use it. Thanks. [IMG]

    Notice that the only other country on that list that is a civilized democracy is Japan and they had only 1 execution. I suppose you could argue that Singapore is a civilized democracy but they have some extreme ideas about punishment. (It's against the law to chew gum, drug users automatically get the drug penalty, caning, etc.)
